  1. Would TMP ever have a solo contest for its users? Everyone who came could pay an entry fee to help cover costs..........

Yes, we had thought of this one previously, but it does have some limitations. Interesting suggestion though thanks, and we will consider doing something.

One thing to point out though, is that we do the Whits every year, and it is a mammoth task - usually undertaken by our very own Roger Thorne - who does a fantastic job of recruiting the band, arranging the logistcs, and rehearsing etc... it might sound an easy thing to do, but there are many items to get absolutely right which will ensure something like this runs smoothly.

We will think about it though Paul, thanks.

There are a lot of players, both pro and am, I think that would be up for trying out in a friendly competition!

I think if it was tied in with a social event, and especially if prizes could be offered in several categories (e.g. by instrument, age, section etc) it could be a fantastic event - an obvious choice would be to have a solo contest somewhere in the Oldham area the day after the Whit's, when many tMPers might be in the tMP hotel anyway, and many other bands will be staying in the area.

Organization and finance (for hall, prizes etc) would obviously be a major issue. (though if tMP band were staying at a hotel overnight for the Whit's venue might be negotiable with the hotel management - I don't suppose Saturday mornings are oversubscribed especially in a hotel full of hung-over bandsmen from the night before)

Yeah, really good idea. But as TMP being such a widely spread organisation it would ddefinetly have to be around an important event such as Whit Friday so all bandsmen and women are in a local area.
With finance alot of effort would have to be put in to get it up and running. And in the end it would surely come down to the organisers as it would take up alot of their time and weekends. :D

Why not have a solo contest run by sending in a recording of the playing to an adjudicator? That way it would not be restricted to a specific time and date, and would allow entry from anyone anywhere.

I am sure it would fit in with the trendsetting idea of tMP to have a contest run on cyberspace. You could even perhaps put the recordings on the site - have an adjudication by the users of tMP.

Not sure how it would work in practise, i am writing as i think...

Set a date by which entries have to be emailed/sent to tMP. Set up a page with each instrumental section on it - the chance to listen to recordings and make a decision (which would be kept hidden - a bit like some of the polls we have here). There could then be an adjudicator invited to judge each instrumental section and you would get two winners, tMP users' winner and the adjudicators winner.

It could be an entirely open contest, or there could be a selection of pieces for each instrument to choose from? There could be different sections for recordings done at home, and those accompanied by a band on a CD or similar, or insist that every recording has to be in a certain format - e.g. the person has to introduce their piece and give a time date or something.

    Is that a rubbish idea?

Not necessarily, but it's relatively easy to concoct a 'perfect' performance in a recording that isn't anywhere near to 'reality' :wow

Maybe it would have to be a video of the performance a la YouTube then...

... as I look for that solo tuba recording I can only aspire to

That's one way round'd still have to be a single angle job....even then if you really wanted to (and I'm not suggesting for one minute that anyone would) you could still cheat. It'd just be harder ;)

Perhaps there could be a Brass Band Karaoke section?

As I see it, the whole point of such a competition would be to give us the chance to meet one another and socialise, in which case a contest via recordings would be rather a waste of time.

I dont want to sound like a party pooper on this one but surely the logistics of this would be such a phenomenal undertaking, the amount of soloists, the amount of time per soloist, the professional soloists, amateur soloists, juniors, all these would have to be administered into various categories to keep the event fair, Who would want to organise all this ?:dunno

We would, honestly... as long as we had enough interest. There's no reason at all why we couldn't embark on this type of contest, and even make it a National one...

We have our excellent team, who are all wonderfully enthusiastic and passionate about tMP, and I am sure we could recruit some further willing volunteers.

I'd be more than happy to consider this if we could be assured of a good number of entrants.
