    tMP presents: The World's 100 Favourite Test Pieces 2006 - The Results

    [IMG]

    Well I've finally finished trawling through the PMs received for the survey - many thanks to everyone who took the time to think of their top 10 favourite test pieces, and submit them to me over the last month or so. Thanks also to tMPer 'BreadOfHeaven' who's idea this was originally when he undertook the first favourite test piece poll back in 2004. I have revisited the results of 2004's survey to indicate whether pieces are new to the list this year or whether they have gained in popularity or even become less popular in the last 2 years.

    A total of 188 different pieces were put forward, and 75 different composers were nominated. From the Top 100 that is published below (it actually includes 109 pieces in all, due to ties in some positions) 46 pieces fell down the chart, 25 were climbers, 2 were non-movers and there was a whopping 36 pieces being featured in the Top 100 for the first time.

    The biggest new success was Kenneth Downie's 'St. Magnus' coming straight in at #5 - one of two new entries in the top 10. There were a total of 5 new entries in the top 20 - all are new pieces written or published since the 2004 survey.

    It's good to note that the highest climber this year is a 'lower section' piece - Philip Sparke's 'Triptych' - climbing 72 places to #24.

    Surprisingly, the biggest casualty is one of the 'classics' from the past - 'Diadem of Gold' - which fell 61 places to #100.

    As for our favourite composers, there are two ways to look at it - those with the highest number of points received from their test pieces in the list, and those with the most pieces in the list. Either way, we have a clear favorite composer!

    The composers lists are as follows:

    Highest Number of Points:

    1. Philip Sparke (957 points)
    2. Eric Ball (667)
    3. Philip Wilby (589)
    4. Peter Graham (397)
    5. Derek Bourgeois (330)
    6. Gilbert Vinter (284)
    7. Kenneth Downie (257)
    8. Edward Gregson (179)
    9. Johan de Meij (176)
    10. Wilfred Heaton (171)

    Total Number of Test Pieces Featured:

    1. Philip Sparke (13 pieces)
    2. Eric Ball (8 pieces)
    3= Gilbert Vinter (7)
    3= Peter Graham (7)
    5= Philip Wilby (6)
    5= Edward Gregson (6)
    7. Derek Bourgeois (5)
    8. Kenneth Downie (4)
    9= George Lloyd (3)
    9= Michael Ball (3)

    Well that's a brief summary, so now on to the detail!

    Seems like an awful lot of work for the same songs in the top 4 ;-)

    Is management able to share how many people voted?

    Great work Dyl:clap:
    Sad to see one of my faves fall down (Plantagenets) but it is no surprise to see a lot of new pieces in the chart as trends and tastes change. I'm surprised Journey into Freedom was still the top choice though.:confused:

    I know:rolleyes: ..... I just didn't realise that the date had come around so fast and I hadn't been on far a while.... Can't really complain though it's a very good hundred in all but i just don't agree with number one!!:eek:

    Last year I couldn't believe how Journey was the top spot.. but after playing it at NYBB - it's amazing!!

    Well I personally have no problem with Journey as number 1 - its a fabulous piece. I thought it would be interesting to see how my "pick" fared in the big countdown so here they are (top 100 positions in blue)

    1. Harmony Music (Sparke) (8 )
    2. Journey into Freedom (Ball) (1)
    3. A Downland Suite (Ireland) (not listed :eek: )
    4. The Essence of Time (Graham) (16)
    5. Year of the Dragon (Sparke) (3)
    6. Spectrum (Vinter) (10)
    7. Eden (Pickard) (not listed)
    8. Cloudcatcher Fells (McCabe) (13)
    9. Les Preludes (Verdi arr. Gay) (36)
    10. The Night to Sing (Tovey) (28 )
    So then a bit of a mixed bag, with two non-entries. Eden I can understand - I love it, although some of my banding buddies think I'm nuts because of that, but the real surprise for me was A Downland Suite. I know its on brown paper now, but its still lovely music and has the best slow movement of any test piece IMHO (yes even better than Year of the Dragon - although its close). I've scanned the list several times now, and I'm still surprised it's not there.

    Nope, just gone down the list again and its still not there. :-? Amazing.

    That's how my choices fared, not a bad list all in all! I missed out some obvious ones that I would put in if I was doing it again, eg. Extreme Makover, and Isiah 40. Even Deus Vobiscum (Redhead) would have made it onto my list if I had been thinking straight! Absolutely love it! Still, am happy with my choices!

    dyl, I don't know how accessible the results are, but is it possible to say which were, say, the first 3 pieces in terms of being individuals' No 1 choices?

    Woohoo! Glad to see this one made it this time! I thought I'd be the only one voting for it! Great piece, would recommend it to any fourth section band. St Agnes have played it twice in the last ten years, getting great results both times, so it's lucky too! :D

    As for A Downland Suite, I'm surprised it didn't make it. It was in my top fifteen...can't remember if it made it to my final ten though! It's a good piece too!
