tMP Exclusive Interview with Peter - Webmaster – BT Band
Web Site of the Month Award Winner - May 2005

By way of an introduction, could you please tell us a little about yourself

Peter Shaw, Work for BT as a Broadband Manager in Manchester, age 30 something, Married with 2 boys, Thomas (8 ) and Harry (5), (both mini me's). Been playing the cornet for approx 30 something years, but never practise!

Are you actively involved in playing a brass instrument with any band, or do you simply undertake the web design on behalf of a band?
I am the principal cornet of the BT Band

How long have you been involved in web design how did you first get involved in it?

About 3 years on and off

Do you manage/run any other web sites, if so, which ones?

What applications did you use to build your site and why did you choose these?

    FrontPage 2000

Please can you explain for us how you prepared and planned for the development of the site when asked to implement this for the BT Band?

Just dabbled about and learnt it myself, I'm not that experienced at it, but I get by.

What content do you feel should be included on a brass band www site?

All useful info, player info, history of the band, engagement diary, etc etc

Do you use innovative ideas on your www site?

Not really, just put on any suggestions or ideas that get suggested

Why should people visit the BT Band www site?

    Because its funny,,, sometimes!!

What do you feel is important when designing and implementing www sites…?

Ensuring its easy to navigate, informative and eye catching

How long did this site actually take you to build?

Not too sure really, probably a few days

How do you manage the content on your web site and do you have a publishing policy?

Just add bits when I get time and no I don't have a publishing policy, don't even know what one is!

What would you recommend as the best way to start to learn about designing and building www sites?

Get a beginners guide and just have a go!

Do you have a favourite technical reference book for budding web designers?

No, I just try things and see if they work!

How do you see the influence of the internet assisting the banding movement over the next 5 to 10 years?
Hopefully promoting the ever declining movement more and attract younger audiences, rather than the blue rinse brigade we all play to at the moment.

In most visited order, what are your 5 most frequently used www sites?

    Ha, I daren't publish them! ;)

Can you let our members know of any other www sites you feel are interesting to visit but are not in your top 5, and why this is so.

    Same as above!

Could you please name your all time favourite www site, and why so?
Hahaha,,,I'm going to play safe here and go for and why?, because I built it!

Do you use online community forums, if so, which ones do you use?
    No, not really

What do you do to relax and unwind?

Play and watch football, watch my son play for his team, support the Belle Vue Aces speedway team.
