Does anyone know if Thea Musgrave's Variations for Band has ever been used as a test piece for a contest or if there are any recordings of the piece available? Thanks

I'm not too sure whether it has been used as a test-piece, but it was originally a commission for the National Youth Brass Band Of Scotland.

It was used as the Youth Section test piece in the National finals in, um, 1984 (or maybe 1983 - but I think that was Aspirations by Bourgeois...but that might have been 1982....I'm getting too old to remember) when there was an additional own choice piece (under 4 minutes) played....did it with Besses Boys and we chose Relaxation from Salute to Youth

Yep, definitely 1984 Youth Finals. Seem to remember being scared to death cos the first line is a trombone solo.
Not sure where we came but we've got a plaque of the first page of the score on our bandroom wall.
