Andrew Baker’s “The Once & Future King”, the 2009 Area 3rd Section Test Piece, has been transcribed for full Symphony Orchestra.

The Once & Future King was composed by Andrew Baker in 2007 and was entered into a composition competition run by the Swiss Brass Band Association to find Test Pieces for their National Championships that year. It was chosen by the adjudicating panel for use in the 3rd Section. It was subsequently chosen by the National Brass Bands Championships Music Panel as the 3rd Section Area Test Piece 2009. It was here that the piece was first heard by John Bryant, the then conductor of the Weston Super Mare Band, and he thought it would work well with a Symphony Orchestra. John is the Course Manager for the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain and he mentioned the piece to its Conductor, Roger Clarkson who agreed in principle to go ahead. It was then decided between John, Andrew and his publishers JAGRINS that John would be granted permission to make the transcription and with input from all 3 parties an orchestral version was made. After receiving the completed score, Roger Clarkson agreed to use the piece and the work will receive its first performance by the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain (under 12 Orchestra) conducted Roger Clarkson at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire on Saturday 21st August 2010 at 11:00am.

Andrew is obviously delighted with this little piece of history “as it is not the norm for music originally written for Brass Band to then be transcribed for Symphony Orchestra. Often orchestral works are transcribed for Brass Band and this has become a large part of the Brass Band repertoire over the years. There are very few works originally for brass band in the orchestral repertoire, and those that exist are by legendary British composers like Holst, Ireland, Elgar and Howells; I am honoured that I have been allowed to join them.”

JAGRINS is also very honoured to be part of this project and to praise the writing of Andrew Baker. “Andrew has written many original compositions and some arrangements that we have published in addition to ‘The Once & Future King’ including commissioned Solos for both Gavin Pritchard and more recently for Owen Farr and we believe he has a bright future ahead of him as a composer of note within the Brass Band movement at least.”
