Members of the Abraham Darby Specialist School for Performing Arts, Madeley, Telford returned home on Sunday evening after participating in the 2nd London International Wind Band Festival held at The Anvil, Basingstoke, in celebratory mood having been awarded with a Gold Award.

This visit represented the first occasion that the Showband had attended this International prestigious event with a stunning performance which astounded many of the foreign visitors in the Hall. The Showband played Festivo by Edward Gregson followed by an atmospheric and spectacular performance of Impressions of Japan by James Barnes. The Showband competed with the Northland Community Band from Minnesota USA; the Hillcrest Concert Band from Cleveland, Ohio both of which are well established all adult bands who received Bronze and Silver Awards respectively and the Northamptonshire County Youth Concert Band under the baton of Peter Smalley, who were also similarly awarded with a Gold Award.

On Monday, the Showband will be heard playing at the School’s New Intake Night an event that has also become very important in the school calendar when the next academic year’s pupils visit the school. Following this on Tuesday night the next leg of the European tour begins as they then head off to Zurich, Switzerland along with the School’s Senior Brass Band to participate in the World Youth Music Festival.

Simon Platford, the School’s Director of Performing Arts said “that the performance today was outstanding and that to receive a Gold Award along with Northamptonshire County Youth was a significant achievement, and represented a well earned reward for the high commitment and dedication shown by all the Band members, staff and parents. He further said “that what made this result remarkable was that to achieve the same award as a well established and very successful County Youth Band was a true measure of the exceptional sustained standard that this single school band had attained.”
