Members of the Showband and Senior Brass Band from the Abraham Darby Specialist School for the Performing Arts, Madeley, Telford have returned from the International Youth Music Festival that was held in Zurich, Switzerland on Sunday with the awarding of a First Prize in both of the divisions that they had entered.

Despite having an early start following their departure from their base in Lahr, Germany in the early hours of the morning they arrived at the Festival in good spirits and following their performance of the test piece entitled Just in Time written by Christoph Walter and the impressive and atmospheric Impressions of Japan by James Barnes the band were awarded a total of 321.5 points which resulted in them achieving First Place. The Showband was in competition with 21 other Youth bands from Switzerland, Scandinavia, Germany and Israel.

In the afternoon, the Senior Brass Band played in the Brass Band Second Division in which they also achieved the awarding of a First Prize obtaining a total score of 302 points having played the test piece entitled Jazz Colours written by Olivier Marquis and their own choice entitled Legend in Brass written by the American James Curnow.

Simon Platford, the schools Director of Performing Arts, said “that he was extremely delighted for both band’s members in this Festival and that the result was even more remarkable given the fact that the school was competing against other bands where the average age of their members was well in excess of the school band’s average age of 15. He was also very pleased with the result as this represented the first time that the school had participated at this prestigious international event and it was very pleasing to return with the first prize award.
