The talented band members from the multi award winning Abraham Darby Specialist School for the Performing Arts Madeley Telford have been spending a couple of days in what would otherwise be a free weekend by entertaining shoppers at the Telford Shopping Centre with festive music whilst the shoppers attend to the busy shopping. The School every year performs in a number of small groups within the Shopping Centre and this serves two purposes by not only entertaining the members of the public but also assists in raising much needed funds for the School so that it can continue the school’s continued and sustained success. Over these two days the sum of nearly £1500 was raised, which together with the £650 that was raised at the Christmas Fayre that had been held the previous Friday (2nd December), meant that the overall target of £2000 had been exceeded. Simon Platford, the School’s Director of Performing Arts said “that over many years the band playing in the Telford Shopping Centre has become a regular event. I would like on behalf of all the band members, school and the Supporters of Music at Abraham Darby School to extend a very big thank you to Ray Hoof, the Shopping Centre Manager, for allowing us the opportunity to play at this time. We would also like to sincerely thank all the shoppers who found the time while shopping to listen to us and for the marvellous donations and the many congratulatory words of support and gratitude”. On the 4th February next year the School in its well equipped Selwyn Theatre hosts a another joint concert with the Sellers International Band from Huddersfield led by their famous musical director Phillip McCann. This will be the fourth annual concert that the school has hosted where the Sellers International Band has been the guests and a splendid night’s entertainment is guaranteed. Andrew Roberts, the Chairperson of the Supporters of Music at Abraham Darby School (SMADS) said “that the whole school were looking forward to the joint concert in February and work had already started to ensure that the whole evening was a memorable event in the School’s calendar. It was pleasing to note that a band with the long standing reputation that Sellers’ has acquired should find the time in their very busy schedule to visit the school for this concert and for all the band members to experience their fantastic playing”. Tickets are priced at £8.00 and £6.00 and are available from the school on (01952) 432081 ext 211 or from the Supporters of Music at Abraham Darby School on either (01952) 400686 or (07798) 843458.
