I bought myself a leek plant this afternoon at a lovely village fete at a country house (where the band was playing). I've never had this type of plant before. Does anyone out there in tMP-land know how to care for them or if they need specific conditions?

I can cultivate my rose bushes but for me this is a step in a new direction... ;-)

Poke a deep hole in the soil and drop it in then water well. Sit back and watch it grow.

I know it sounded like a stupid question really but I wondered if there were any special instructions...

Only that you need to dig it up on 1st March and pin it to your lapel ;)

I know a good arrangement of Men of Harlech to go with it ;)

I would put some compost/manure at the bottom of the hole. Keep them well watered or they will bolt (go to seed). Probably an idea to 'feed' them too. Any general purpose fertiliser will do (chicken manure is good if you want to be organic). Must ask though, you bought just 1 leek? Hope it doesn't die or you will be gutted!

I say I bought a leek, it was actually an ensemble of leeks in a single large pot.

    Thanks for the advice!
