Well, though I wasn't at the competition and therefore didn't hear any performances - I am surprised based on current form - that Black Dyke came 13th! - please don't think I'm suggesting that bands above them didn't deserve it, according to the man in the box they obviously did, but it's a rare thing to see Black Dyke such a way down in the results list... good god they've won the National so many times... :?

Was anyone from there today? perhaps you could offer your thoughts here?

Well done though to Brighouse and Asda Stocksbridge - you're on your way... :D :D

Unfortunately, we didn't qualify John, as Black Dyke had already pre-qualified for the Nationals by virtue of their result last year in the Finals. B&R, Stocksbridge and Dyke will be there come October :)

    The programme from today reads:

Never mind, maybe next time though! :)

I heard all the bands except Sellers, Skelmanthorpe and Marsden - I was 'Pragued-out' by then!

I can't make much sense of the results - Brighouse were certainly very good - a refined and well shaped performance, well directed at all times - but so were Grimethorpe, YBS and Dyke. Few I spoke to had Dyke as outright winners but they were certainly in a different class from many of the bands who finished above them. YBS were a model of clarity and precision but had just a couple of lapses.

Dyke did play off number one, and from a similar experience with this adjudicator I can sympathise with them! He didn't really say what his criteria had been, except that he was looking for a sense of commitment in the opening chords, and Dyke certainly never lacked commitment...

Of the 'lesser' bands I enjoyed Rothwell Temps and Pennine.

My top six: Grimethorpe, YBS, Brighouse, Imps, Dyke, Rothwell.

As Black Dyke had already qualified do you think they worked hard enough on the piece?
I can't see a 'busy' band like Dyke rehearsing Prague for six weeks if they knew they were already going to London!

It also begs the question why are they expected to compete at the Regionals if they have already qualified?

    The mind boggles! :?

    Yorkshire Areas

I saw 5 of the champ bands yesterday - Black Dyke, YBS, Pennine, Hepworth and Brighouse, and i honestly can't see how Dyke came 13th!

I've been told that they hadn't done as much as usual on the piece (not sure if this is true) because they have already qualified, but although i wouldn't have placed them winners it was still a top class performance!

Did anyone hear Stocksbridge? A surprise result there, i can't really comment because i didn't hear them, but were they worthy winners? Well done all the same, it'll make a nice change to have some new faces at the nationals!

    Hi Helen :)

    How's your playing?! I bet you're on form :)

I only heard (as we played 10th) B & R, Stocksbridge (who it would be innapropriate for me to comment on for obvious reasons! 8) ) and Lindley.

I must admit, I enjoyed playing the piece far more than I did listening to it!

think dyke did about 2 weeks i think :S
but yeah, i dont see why the bands who have already qualified should turn up at all.. if im right.. faireys had a meeting to discuss whether they should just turn up and sight-read prague at the contest... but i think they are doing this week before it!!!

Strange results in Yorkshire (Black Dyke 13/16) and in the Midlands (Travelsphere 11/12) - Both Bands were drawn number 1. Does anybody think that this is a factor?

Especcialy as you'd have qualified if that rule wasn't in motion! :p:p Who wants to go to Dundee anyway :p:p (I can see a lot of abuse [wonder why]!!!!)

I missed Drighlington and Yorkshire Imps but listened to all the rest of the championship section. Suprisingly I enjoyed the piece but wouldn't pretend to be able to adjudicate it. With Black Dyke playing number 1 I didn't know what to listen for but they sounded powerful and tight as did the rest of the top 4. Some of the other bands lacked the same dynamic contrast and were not as tidy. Stocksbridge made a great start with some powerful bass playing and the cornets sounded together and in tune. I thought they may have done well but put it down to wishfull thinking as they are local to us and I know quite a lot of the players.

    Surprise result ???????????

I personally did not hear any bands although I would have liked to hear more. But drawn 13 it was a bit difficult to wind down and listen to more bands.
Yep, surprised me that Dyke didn't come higher, then again I didnt hear them. However, the issue of being drawn number 1 should not be an issue and as for motivation of going to a contest already knowing your through, I think that should not be an issue either. I've been in those situations and I'm sure the Dyke players worked very hard, I wouldn't want to be seen as shoddy or haphazard.
If people can remember we were drawn no 1 at London last year on Masquarade and we came high up. But many said that we should have been higher. We went on at no.1 knowing that with the law of averages that we wouldnt win off no.1 but we played a blinder.
Goff played it as he heard it, thats the end of the matter. As it should be with every contest. If we had a whole audience voting then it would mean no chance to the lesser bands and the more fancied bands would always be in the top 4!
One persons masterpiece is anothers nightmare performance!!! Whatever an adjudicator will put down there will be arguments! + he doesnt have time to write a major analysis on every performance!!

    Hi Matt,

Long time no see, well done for the weekend, shame you didn't qualify!

My playing's going great thanks, looking forward to the areas this weekend! I found listening to the piece quite interesting, and although i couldn't sit through the whole section it made a nice change to hear what other bands did with it! I might try and hear some bands at Blackpool too, but i can imagine a lot of time will be spent socialising at the bar instead!

By the way i think elland got relegated this weekend! :( They should get better now though cos they've just announced Philip Wilby as the new conductor!
