Starting a learners band - advice needed

The Medway Band and the school where we rehearse are launching a learner band in January 2012. Whilst the aim is to get as many children from the school as possible learning brass instruments, we're also hoping to attract learners from the local area too.

So far the school have written to parents telling them about the scheme and small groups from the band will be performing in assemblies in January leading to a Saturday morning 'drop in' session where parents and children can find out more about the opportunity. We have 2 bands and they will both be there, and we've been fortunate to receive a grant that has enabled us to buy some new instruments and they will be on display. Beyond that we're not sure what to do so has anyone got experience of organising this type of event and know what works and what doesn't?

    Many thanks.

Arrange a short (free) concert from your main band to show the children, and the parents, just how good it can be.

And make sure everyone can 'have a blow', it takes almost 60 seconds to show a child how to blow a 'raspberry' and then put an instrument in front of them.

Thanks Steve. Anyone else have any other suggestions?

Drop a note to Toby Hobson ( a member on here). He'll give you some pointers as he now runs a very well structured beginners/junior/youth band and I think he started it from pretty much nothing.
