The Shirley Band (MD David Bishop-Rowe) are looking for a couple of cornets, front or back row, to complete our team and a tenor trombone to put us back up to full strength ahead of a busy concert and contest schedule beginning with the Wychavon Contest on 1st November. We are currently ranked in the top half of the 1st Section and are looking to consolidate and improve our position within the brass band world.

We have a realistic approach to commitment, and only ask that members do their best to attend, allowing for work, family and other commitments. Students are therefore welcome, and many of our former student members have thoroughly enjoyed their time with us.

We rehearse on Wednesday and Friday evenings at 8 pm, alternating our rehearsal venues from Light Hall School, Shirley and Hockley Heath Village Hall. Both of these venues are easily accessible by road, being only a couple of miles from junction 4 of the M42. Our players attend from a wide range of locations throughout the West Midlands and lifts could also be arranged should you require transport.

Further details can be found on or website,, which contains loads of information about the band together with contact numbers. Alternatively, please feel free to PM me (though I haven't been 4th man down for years!).

A bump from me - we have gained a couple of cornet players but still have a back row vacancy and still looking for trombones :)

Well, we're pretty pleased with our 3rd place at the Midlands Areas and exciting times are ahead.

If you'd be interested in joining us - perhaps for the finals at Cheltenham - and play:

    - cornet
    - tenor horn
    - trombone

then we'd love to hear from you. We're a nice bunch of people with occasionally witty but largely purple senses of humour, herded along by an inspiring MD in the form of David Bishop-Rowe.

We perform at Wychavon and Pershore in addition to the championship, put on several of our own concerts each year and have a busy summer programme of band stand gigs and typical fayres and weddings. Come Christmas we have lots of repeat concert bookings and tend to spend a lot of weekends getting cold outside shops.

Rehearsals are Wednesdays and Fridays and whilst we do need people who want to commit, everybody in the band has work and families so a best effort is all that's expected.
