My CD drive won't open on my computer and in it there is an important assignment (on the CD!)
Can anybody suggest any suitable computer drive opening techniques?

Would it be suggesting the obvious to say shut right down, power off at the wall completely, wait one minute, turn on and try again?

Well it probably is the obvious, but I didn't think of it!
I'll give it a go thanks.

Can you save it on to the computer and email it?

OK, I feel stupid now and like an over reacting girl!

Turning it off and on again seemed to work like a dream. Thanks Di, you're a superstar- if you ever need to teach a series of lessons using comics, I'll let you borrow the disc that got stuck!
THanks for the other advise too, much appreciated during my 5 minutes of need!

Excellent. :) We're all prone to a little panic now and then. ;)

For the record, most CD drives have a subtle little hole, and come with a thin piece of steel so that in the event of the CD drive not opening you can release the drive latch by pressing the steel pin through the hole. :)

Yep, located just below the drive door. I've never yet bought a drive that comes with the little piece of steel required to open it though!! A straightened out paper clip is the perfect size to open any drive which is being stubborn. Glad you got it sorted your twiggeness.

Thats not a serious problem. A serious problem is when it burst into flames suddenly and takes the corner of your room with it.

Although glad you got it sorted.
I thought everyone knew that the only way to sort a computer problem was to turn it off and on again.
