Hey all. I'm looking for anyone who has, or is selling a 966 Sovereign euphonium. Even if it is not for sale, I would really like to have a try and see what they are like! Would any major music shops stock them? E.g Mr Tuba?

Was it you I spoke to at the Masters?! I would try ringing a few of the major ones and asking them to keep an eye out - I did that with mine on quite a rare spec and Glynn Williams found it for me, at the right price too. Good luck!

I've played several, including Morgan Griffiths' and they're lovely. Very sweet centred sound and a beautiful contrast to the larger instruments. Good luck finding one and I think you'll find I'll be in the queue ahead of you! :) (I worked in a specialist brass retailer for 8 years and in that time we only had one 966 come in amongst probably hundreds of second hand euphs).

The only thing I did find is that my SM3Ultra didn't work perfectly, so I'd probably go back to a 4AL for maximum authenticity. Also don't let anyone tell you the Imperial is exactly the same - I've been told that several times and it simply isn't true. I

    Thanks for the replies!

Yes! It's me Toni! I'll check around some of the major retailers then! Say hello to Bender Roberts for me in band!

Simon. The reason I'm looking for one is because of Morgan :) He's my euph hero! I've just been abit stumped in finding one recently. I've found one on a Japanese website, but it is rather tricky to understand. Is the 968 similar? Or are the two completely different?

The 968 is a large bore instrument with a smaller bell - 11" rather than 12". I've played them and don't really like them. The difference with the 966 is that it is a medium bore rather than large bore euphonium. The mouth pipe has a large receiver for modern mouthpieces. I don't like the 968 as it always felt a bit restricted - too much air going in possibly. The 966s I've played don't feel like this. Best of luck in your search - I've got a lovely 967 which I plan to keep. I have lots of contacts so if I hear of anything I will post on here.

A quick update. I now have an immaculate Sovereign 966 in BSP, courtesy of Cash4Brass. Jenny (jennyT125) is a member on here and is blessed with an uncanny ability to source rare or unusual hooters at great prices. If you're still looking get in touch with her!
