Very saddened to learn of the passing of Rostropovich yesterday. The words genius etc. are so often overused but he certainly was. Impeccable performer and conductor, and champion of many causes.

Greatest? Not sure, especially bearing in mind the competition - Bernstein, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Boulez, Menuhin and many others.

But certainly an astonishing, remarkable musician, and one of many prominent Soviet citizens with everything to lose who put their lives on the line to challenge the state. He stood up to be counted; the finest epitaph any human could wish for.
