Thanks a million. I hope the NWABBA post the full results including own choice test pieces. It would be interesting to see who played what.

Thanks a million, that's exactly what I was looking for. Great variety in choices (except 4th section). Well done to Milnrow, who won off the earliest draw.

I couldnt see anything on the tinterweb about the contest as it was going on. I couldnt even find the results. Bit of a shame for such a grand old contest. You would of thought there would of been something!

Just throwing this out there: could Milnrow's choice of 'Vita' have effectively given the judges the sly nod that "here's a band that competed at the Open"?

Sorry Toby I was a bit busy running the contest. I tweeted the results from @NWABBA and put them on Facebook but apart from that I could do no more! Next year I will make sure someone else is given the task of live tweets.

With regards to the choice of piece influencing the judges surely that happens at all own choice contests it would not be fair to restrict the choice of piece. We were extremely pleased that Milnrow put their "necks on the line" to support their local concert.

All in all a very successful day and in the diary for next year with the possibility of adding a youth contest to make a festival weekend, I'll be having a chat with you Toby about that soon.

And congratulations to you on a successful event. I agree that Milnrow were within their rights to pick whatever they wished and there's nothing the organisers can do to legislate against it...I wasn't attempting to criticise the event.

Well, given that the judges are hearing the Open piece, one possibility is that the band playing it played it at the Open. The other possibility (quite a large one, maybe even the likeliest) is that it's being played by a band that would like the judge to think that they played it at the Open. You see this at all levels - e.g. lower section bands that didn't qualify for the finals in a particular year playing out the finals piece for their section as an own choice - this happens pretty regularly. It doesn't even have to be a cynical choice - maybe a band just want to play a piece that is certified as a bit more stretching than their usual. Or maybe they just like it as a piece of music!

I'm sure putting the results on http://brassbandresults.co.uk/ would be a better use of your time than putting them on Facebook...but then I might be slightly biased!

Rochdale competition was a well organised event, the venue was superb.
It doesn't matter if you choose to play and open piece, a national finals piece or another own choice piece... You a till need to play it well.

Congratulations to every one involved in the organisation and I hope it continues for many years to come.
