we're not :( . We sent in our form but missed out as they had already accepted the maximum number of bands that they could have. Maybe next year.

You will find a full list of bands on the Ripon City Band website - contest page. 16 in total.

After such a tremendous response for places which had the contest full (12 bands) within 3 days of the date from which entries would be accepted. The Ripon City Band decided to cancel their proposed concert which was to follow the contest in the Cathedral and allow a further 4 bands to come along and compete. There ars still some bands who are on a waiting list in case of withdrawals and we would urge any bands who have a confirmed entry and have to withdraw for any reason to please let the contest seecretary know asap so that reserve bands can be given the opportunity to compete.

Hope every band who competes has a great day of friendly competition.

Sounds like a fun time! I know one of the former Ripon horn blowers and have been to the town. Being from the US,
could someone explain what an Entertainments Programme is? Sorry for my ignorance, I have never heard of it.

Fwtimp - it's a contest where instead of playing a set test piece, you choose up your own programme up to a time limit (in the case of Ripon, 20 minutes). The programme would usually include a hymn tune, a march and a solo, and it is usual for there to be a prize for the best of each of these.

This event was oversubscribed this year even though the entry was increased from 12 to 16 bands. A total of 23 bands submitted entries and others have intimated that they are interested in competing in the future. Currently entries are accepted on a first come - first served basis and this year the entry was full within about 4 days. The organisers are seeking your thoughts on how and if this system can be made more fair for the entering bands? Do we keep this system? do we ask interested bands to submit their entries by a closing date and then pull the first 16 out of a hat at random? or are there any other ways of doing it. Your thoughts/idea's are welcome so that we can discuss them and hopefully come up with a better system that is fair to all - if there is one? Many thanks. PeterG

Is there any chance that someone could post up what the entertainment programmes that were played. I know that Denton Brass had an African Theme which included : "The Elephant" March by Ord Hume, "Out Of Africa", "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" with one or two more finishing with "Born Free".
