Florence Brass have recently suffered a deep loss with the death of Doug Smith.

Doug joined the band in 1956, and until his death 18th February 2009 served the band tirelessly. He was the band's treasurer, and a horn player.

Doug was one of those guys that you have in a band that does everything. It was Doug that transported all the stands, music, banners, spare jackets.... you know the sort of thing - Doug did it all.

If ever there was a bandsman, Doug was it!

Doug would not be known nationally, but certainly around Stoke-on-Trent, I can't imagine that many bandsmen / bandswomen would not have known him.

If ever there was a bandsman that considered his band to be his family - that was Doug.

Florence Brass today played at his funeral - and what an emotional event it was. At the centre of the band (in front of the MD stand) was an empty chair, with a stand in front, and on the stand, Doug's music pad.

The band played "Panis Angelicus" during his service and as the coffin was taken out, "Carillon", a fitting piece of music for a horn player - with a beautiful horn solo.

We have dedicated a page on our website to Doug....
