[imgleft]http://www.jagrins.com/ray_front_cover.jpg[/imgleft] JAGRINS Music Publications are pleased to announce the release of Ray Farr’s book and DVD on conducting, entitled ‘Introduction to Conducting’. Ray Farr, who is thought of by many to have the best ‘stick technique’ around is the Conductor in Residence at Durham University and is currently Director of the University’s “Centre for Brass Band Studies”. He has been conducting bands like Grimethorpe, Yorkshire Imps, Eikanger, Reg Vardy and many more all over the world for the last 30 years or so. As a teacher Ray has given lectures on conducting, arranging and adjudicating at Leeds College of Music, Huddersfield College, Salford College, Newcastle College, Cardiff College and the Music Conservatories of Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim, Malmø, Gothenburg and Stockholm. He has conducted Norway’s Radio Orchestra on five occasions, made a World Wide TV programme with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and gave an exciting concert of French music with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. Ray was voted “Conductor of the Year” for 2004 by the internationally acclaimed internet website www.4barsrest.com. Ray says, “This book and accompanying DVD follows naturally from years of conducting and teaching experience and is an attempt to describe the indescribable art of conducting and is an effort to stimulate and encourage the aspiring conductor”. Although it is aimed primarily at aspiring conductors, it could, for sure, also be a useful tool for the more accomplished conductor too. The book is an A4, glossy covered, 50 page tutorial that covers everything from how to prepare to give your first beat to how to conduct difficult uneven time signatures. It is full of helpful advice on most subjects relating to the roll of a conductor and also has exercises to aid hand co-ordination and other techniques. The DVD is more than 30 minutes long and is supplied in its own box with inlay sleeve notes and track listing and has an alternative storage pocket attached to the inside back cover of the book, in case you would want to keep them together. It can either be watched and used as a ‘stand-alone’ tool or watched in conjunction with the book, where part of the book is summarised with examples and where some things are concisely covered in the way of ‘Episodes’ with Ray conducting. The package of book and DVD is competitively priced at £27.50 plus £3 P&P (in the UK). You can order your copy online from us at www.jagrins.com or by sending a cheque made payable to JAGRINS and posted to us at: 14 St Johns Drive, Ton Pentre, Rhondda Cynon Taf CF41 7EU South Wales.
