BBC Radio 2 is inviting young Brass players from all over the UK to enter its annual Young Brass Soloist competition, now in its third year.

The competition, which last year was won by euphonium player Brenden Wheeler, is open to all brass players under the age of 21, of Grade 8 or equivalent standard who play regularly with a brass or wind band, or orchestra. [imgright][/imgright]

The semi-finals will take place on Saturday 11th March 2006 at the BBC Studios in Manchester, and the finals on Sunday 2nd April 2006 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. The competitors will be accompanied by the Black Dyke Band conducted by Nicholas Childs.
Both heats will be judged by a panel of experienced adjudicators from the brass band and classical music worlds. There will be three radio transmissions on BBC Radio 2 made up of performances from the semi-finals and the finals. The prize for the winner of the competition includes an invitation to perform as guest soloist at the European Brass Band Championships in Belfast.

If you would like to enter Radio 2’s Young Brass Soloist of the Year competition please complete the form overleaf and submit it together with:
    • 1. A recent recording of your solo performance, comprising two contrasting pieces of between 5-10 minutes in total (Ideally this will be with band accompaniment, though unaccompanied recordings are acceptable). This recording is needed to provide the initial shortlist for the next stage of the competition. Technical quality of the recording is NOT important - only the musical performance will be taken into account. (This recording can be on any of the following format - .cassette tape, minidisc, dat, CD)
    • 2. Proof of age along with a copy of any relevant music certificates or awards.
    • 3. A letter of recommendation from your teacher, or conductor.
For additional application forms, download from or call the Radio 2 audience line on 08700 100200

Last year, the entrants also had to be residents of the UK. Has that changed?

Is it just the finalists that are accompanied by Black Dyke, or the semi-finalists too?
