Pontin’s Youth Brass Band Festival 2006

Incorporating The British Open Youth Section Championships

The Pontins Brass Band Committee are very disappointed with the entry for this years Pontins Youth Brass Band Festival incorporating the prestigious British Open Youth Section Championship Titles .

Last year after receiving numerous representations regarding the unsuitability of the date for the 2006 Youth Festival, due to major concerns about the unavailability of young players during the schools exams period in June 2006.

The Pontins Brass Band Committee using its policy that any suggestions for improvement to the Youth Festival from anyone with the Brass Bands’ movement interest at heart would be welcomed and acted upon if possible, the Pontin’s Brass Band Committee decided to change the date of the 2006 Youth Brass Festival to the weekend of Friday 15th September to Monday 18th September. The Committee was aware that it would put the event between two of Brass Bands major events,( the British Open on the weekend prior and the Lower Section Finals the weekend after), and advised everyone that this was the only date available at Pontin’s Prestatyn this year other than dates which the Committee is aware would clash with other Youth Competitions and Festivals and of course, other National Brass Band events. The Committee are still endeavouring to find a suitable date in the future without causing inconvenience to others. Late February is a possibility.

The committee however even with the low entry are determined to make a success of the competitions which will take place over the weekend 15th to 18th September 2006 at Prestatyn Sands Holiday Centre in North Wales, commencing with the B section contest on Saturday 16th September at. 12 Noon, Entry to the Centre for the Public will cost £6 for all classes for the whole day, this includes entry to the contest and Pontins facilities.

The line up of bands will be :-

    Dobcross Youth, James Holt,
    Enderby Youth, Trevor Hounsome,
    Sellers International Youth, Mark Bousie,
    Shirland Youth, Maria Smith,
    Valley Brass (Haydock), David Chadwick
    Youth Brass 2000, Chris Jeans.

The A section contest will take place on Sunday 17th September

The bands taking part will be :-
    Mount Charles Youth, Dean Fakrar
West Lothian Schools Brass, Nigel Boddice

The adjudicators for this years Youth Festival will be Dr Roy Newsome and
Dennis Wilby for both sections of the event.

The British Open Brass Band titles are on offer with kind permission of Karyn & Martin Mortimer, to whom Pontins Brass Band Committee is very grateful.
Cash prizes , Trophies and bands travel allowances fund amounts to over £4000.

The format of the competition is a 25 minute programme to include a set test piece, an own choice March, any arranged Hymn Tune and pieces of your own choice to make up the 25 minute programme.

The test pieces: Section A – “ River City Suite” by James Curnow - available from Winwood Music ;. Section B - Movements 1 & 2 (Towers and Chimneys and Lord of the Dance) from Partita “Postcards from Home” by Philip Wilby – available from Winwood Music.
