Just had a look at the bass part for Alan Fernies "Royal Mile Suite" (Pontins 2nd section)

Would any of you bass players out there like to express an opinion ?

Come on now Ian - don't leave it to others, let's have both barrels! Haven't seen the bass part, but snoozing through the sop part once was enough to convince me to get out of Section 2, at least until the Areas!

Not seen it Wilkie, but how does it compare to say...... Carnival? A particular favourite of bass players as I remember!

Wilky did tell me it made Carnival seem like Journey into Freedom :D

PS its good to see the venerable iancwilx back blowing again

The above says it all gentlemen.
Compared to this bland offering, the "Carnival" bass part is a supreme example of the composers art.
The last movement is a turgid, simplified Caledonian charicature of "The Pines of Rome"
"The Pines of Sochiehall Street" perhaps !
I would stress that these are strictly my own personal observations.

I have to agree, last movement is not exactly motivating,exciting,challenging....... but that's what we've got to play and it's up to us to make something of it.

    Very true.
As with "Carnival" the main challenge is not particularly technical, it's mental.
The winning band will have harnessed its concenrative powers and focussed on the job in hand. (and the generous prize money !)
I may not enjoy the piece, but it will have my best attention.

Getting a sense of deja vu here Mr W! We both know doubt remember how we were told to put up and shut up about Carnival,, however our respective results showed you can play the piece very well without enjoying it!

I sincerely hope history repeats itself!
