Although I know the annual mess that is Pontins is a country mile off but surprised nobody has commented on the choices yet.

The Harry & Margaret Mortimer Championship Section:

    Publisher: Novello/Studio Music

    First Section:
    Flamborough Seascapes (Darrol Barry)
    Publisher: Kirklees Music

    Second Section:
    California Legend (Bruce Broughton)
    Publisher: Wynwood Music

    Third Section:
    Partita for Band (Philip Wilby)

Sheddies in the top section are going to be a bit bored on Les Preludes - but I'd love another crack at it. One of my favourites.

Yeah it's a great piece - there are a few hairy bits for the flugel players!

We performed the Broughton piece at the Royal Northern a couple of weeks ago-this will really challenge the 2nd section bands!

Yes it is Andy. Good piece. Bands will enjoy rehearsing it I am sure.

It's a brand new piece of music, the bands at Pontins will be giving it the first performance. More details to follow.

Cracking piece, good fun for players and listeners. Don't know why it isn't used more.

The Bram Gay version is the recent new transcription, yes.

Back to the usual rubbish for the 2nd section then. ...in my opinion!

Can't say I've ever heard it... though I do have it on a sun-life CD somewhere.

One to dig out this evening....

PS. not only five new Darrol Barry pieces for Butlins next year, but also yet another brand, spanking new one for pontins... Now that's earning your pay!!

Have to agree with you on this i played it at the Area in either 1985/ 1986 when in the OLD 2nd section.
    Solo Baritone part
I just did not rate the piece all feel sorry for 2nd section bands who have got to play it or are thinking of going to the contest;)

You want to hear some of my stuff Ian?

It might not be published but I'd hate to be left out just because of that....

Agree with you there about how good it is. Loved playing this version a couple of years back (although the band had a bit of a mare on it). Very very tough, but fantastic playing.

Only if it's got tritones in it ;)

That would be most of it then Keith!!!! ;)

I recall it's exceptionally hard on Soprano and, as Rambochick has alluded to earlier, Flugel...

Does anyone know if it's been recorded by someone other than Cory? I have their version which is very good, but is also full of extra bottom-octave that doesn't always work...
