Phoenix West Midlands Brass will become the first English band to represent their country in the B Section of the European Contest this year.

EBBA has revealed that following the withdrawal of the Ireland and Lithuanian representatives, their executive committee decided to invite another band from the host country. The BFBB nominated Midland based band that recently won the Second Section Midlands Regional title conducted by David Maplestone.

"It has come as a complete shock to us all, but we are honoured to have the opportunity to represent our country, especially as it will mean performing at Symphony Hall"

Band secretary Lisa Jenks, spoke of the bands shock and delight at the prospect of representing England at the magnificent Symphony Hall. "It has come as a complete shock to us all, but we are honoured to have the opportunity to represent our country, especially as it will mean performing at Symphony Hall."

Phoenix will now line up with representatives from Italy and Northern Ireland in what is a disappointing B Section turn out, and one that must give cause for concern for EBBA to its future. That though doesn’t worry Phoenix.

"We were asked last Friday if we would consider representing England by David Dobson from the BFBB, and almost immediately we were able to come back and tell them yes. We have had to formulate our programme and we are beginning work on preparation immediately. We have yet to get the test piece, but we are all looking forward to playing it and we all know that we will have to work as hard as possible in the coming weeks."

Phoenix are certainly on something of a high after winning the Second Section of the Midlands Regional Contest and as a locally based band they feel there is an added incentive to do well. “Everyone connected with the band believes it to be a great honour. We will be nervous for sure, but also so proud too. We can’t wait to take part.”
