(I can't believe I nearly forgot what day it was and could have risked missing out on pancakes today  )

Also known as shrove tuesday or mardi gras (in french). It's the last day before lent, so you use up all your fat and sugar in preparation for fasting. This is traditionally done by making pancakes.

Traditionally, on the day before Ash Wednesday, making the start of Lent, people used to use up all the foodstuffs that they would be abstaining from over the lent period. Over time this evolved into Pancake Day, where pancakes are made, eaten, tossed, carried in races etc.

The phrase "Mardi Gras", or "fat Tuesday" shares the same origin.

Edit: Chris beat me to it, but here's a link giving more background:

All you need is an egg, bit of flour, touch of milk and a dash of water! Sorted! You can do that yourself!
Although it does help if the oven works!

Alternatively you could just buy some from a supermarket and wack them in the microwave for a few minutes. :tup

Shrove Tuesday is always 40 days before Easter which is itself linked in the the Moon, so Pancake day can be any of 26 days (I think).

It just happens that Easter (& therefore Pancake Day) is very early!!
