I'll have a cyber tenner on Cornerstone at 66's please! that's got to be value, I heard them at Butlins this year, If they produce that form for the area, they'll be hard to beat.

Rothwell (and Dyke) are out of this market now as they've pre-qual. I won't be offering prices on them from hear on in.

  15. Don't they still compete at the area though regardless?

They do, their pre-qual invite is conditional on them still competing at their area contest

I guess it depends on whether this is a book about the contest or qualification for London. If it as about the contest then Rothwell and Dyke should still be quoted.

    OK, time for controversy...

Pre-qualified bands don't go to their area with the same level of intensity as others who are fighting for an Albert Hall invite (there, i've said it).

An assessment of their chances of winning would be based on my speculation of how seriously they would be taking this as a one-off contest, i don't want to do that sort of speculation.

It seems strange to me that prequal bands have to compete for a prize they have already won - a chance to compete in the National Championships.
I suppose they are also competing for they're own Area Championship.
That could be a somewhat tenuous reason for their attendance, or is the real reason that it would be a hollow victory for the winning band if the "Big Guns" didn't take part, and perhaps audiences would be reduced if the "Giants" weren't on show.

The same applies at the British Open with the rule that if a band does the "Hat Trick" and wins it three times in successive years then the band is barred for the fourth year.
I mean, has the band that wins it in the fourth year won a true victory as they weren't competing against the previous three times winner as it had been barred ?

Bands have to go to their area regardless of pre-qualification and whatever the authorities tell us is the reason for this, we all know it's down to money, ticket sales to be more precise.

I have an idea that could solve this. Why not make ALL of the Championship Sections a two test piece contest like the Europeans, Oz & NZ Nationals and pretty much every continental national. By adding an own-choice part of the contest it's surely going to up the number of ticket sales at ALL EIGHT areas and take away this charade of pre-qual bands having to face the expense of another contest which they wouldn't normally go to.

We're always banging on about why we should expect Joe Public to listen to 12 bands play the same music, here's a double solution.

In NZ the bands have to play a sacred Item as well as the set piece and an own-choice piece (IE: a hymn or other religious piece of music, though not restricted to christian music) and the results are based on the points over the three.

If someone would bite the bullet and move the national finals away from london, that's a feasible format isn't it?
