But yet they do..... every time. You think adjudicators would learn?

Aye...I'm sure I heard Mr Wilby was at one band pre contest rehearsal...can't recall which one but it wasn't mine.

But that's different from having them in front of you on the day, cos another md will always put their own slant on it. Unless they are a robot/stepford conductor.;)

There's an interesting article up on 4br talking about the finish of the contest on Sunday being ridiculously late yet again. I'm not sure I agree with all of the suggested solutions, but it's something that really should change.

There's some interesting ideas there, but I'm not sure how many good ideas.

I'd be in favour of pre-drawing the contests. It goes along with most of my feelings about closed adjudication. The only reason for the box should be so that the adjudicator isn't influenced by any visual aspects of the performance. Whether he remembers who's playing number 16 or not doesn't really matter, unless we think adjudicators are corrupt, in which case we shouldn't use them. Pre-draw, start earlier, everyone knows vaguely when they'll be playing well in advance, jobs a good un.

I'd also be all in favour of fringe events - I remember when I played at Music for Youth at the Festival Hall (many years ago...) there were mini concerts going on in the foyer as well as the contest in the main hall. To be honest, unless you really like looking at the same old gadgets, shop-soiled instruments and random boxes of music all afternoon, the conference centre is a pretty dull place to wait to play.

I wouldn't want to see test pieces cut artificially short though. If one wants to significantly cut the length of the contest, perhaps cutting the number of bands would be more effective? Maybe if your area only has 6 bands competing, for example, they only send one band and have no area send more than two.

Yo Paddy. What's your odds on last years 1st Section National Champions becoming this years Championship Section National Champions?

Right. Just re-read my hastily-put-together post and realise I come across as a poor deluded fool:oops:.
What I meant to ask was, "Has a 1st Section title holder ever gone on to win Championship at the RAH?"
Of course, I would agree that it is highly unlikely that it could happen this year:D

Since the 1st section's only been in existence since 1992 I very much doubt it....

    According to 4BR:

    Sovereign, 12th in 1992 (2nd Sect Champs., 1991)
    Northop, 18th in 1995
    Thoresby, 17th in 2001

Good Luck - history says you're gonna need it ;)

Don't worry mate - even if you boys don't play to your best there should still be a couple of scotchish bands propping up the bottom placings. Have a good one.

will post before the day is out, just waiting on a few last bets in the league. If you haven't predicted in the tMP predictions comp, get it done (that'll have an effect)

Anyone can influence these odds, JOIN THE LEAGUE TODAY, see my signature for details (but basically e-mail me 10.00 worth of Paddy Pound bets along with a playing name and region BEFORE 7am tomorrow)
