The Masters enters a new phase (in more ways than one) this year. On the plus side they moved to a new home in Kettering, on the down side it's fair to say that they can no longer call themselves 'a Major'.

For the first time since it's inception in 1989 NONE of bandings 'Big Beasts' will be in attendance. Foden's have admirably continued to support the event in recent years when others have 're-arranged their priorties', but sadly now even they have decided not to defend their title (incedently, had they played at the first running in '89 they could have laid claim to being the only band to play in EVERY Masters).

They're not the first absentee champs btw, Leyland in '03 and then YBS in '04 also declined to defend.

So, how about some prices then...

    Reg Vardy - 4/1 fav
    Co-operative Funeralcare - 11/2
    Virtuosi GUS - 8/1
Carlton Main Frickley Colliery - 10/1

    Stavanger Brass - 14/1

    Tredegar Town - 16/1
    Kirkintilloch - 16/1
    Redbridge Brass - 20/1
    Marsden - 20/1
Pemberton Old Wigan DW - 22/1
    Aveley & Newham - 22/1
    Newstead Miners Welfare - 22/1

    Sovereign Brass - 33/1

    EYMS - 40/1
    Lyngby-Tårbæk Brass - 66/1
    Jaguar (Coventry) - 66/1

Well, I'm sure after the first year's experience of the wonders of Kettering's glorious outskirts, bands will be falling over each other to return next year. I can't say it inspires me to go and listen.

I wouldn't mind a virtual tenner on Frickley. With a top man Like Kitrsty Abbotts, and (going on what i heard during last years contesting season) a very strong trombone section, I can see the piece suiting the band and Mr McCann down to the ground. We'll have to see if the inconsistency disappears this year however.

Redbridge and Stavanger are a bit low aren't they Paddy?

Regbridge and Stavanger have both made one outing so far this year, both fields were weaker than this one.

Redbridge 3rd at Butlins, Stavanger 6th @ their National. I'd still say Stav have the best chance of the 'Brass Band des non-Angleterre' contigent but I wouldn't say they were too low either

am I? For a start the masters line-up is twice as big as the Nor Nats. The Masters has at least half a dozen bands in that level just below the big guns whereas Norway has about 3 or 4 (including Stav).

    Reg Vardy? Co-op undertakers? GUS?
My leading 3 in the betting, where are they from?

I'm actually from the north east mate, but live in lancashire....my response was directly to Aidan, and I was just talking generically about the underlying mentality of banding...wasn't having a dig at you ;)

Twice as big doesn't necessarily mean twice as many good bands though ;)
I'll agree to disagree on that one. It's just that folk in the UK only get to hear the top 2 or 3 on a regular basis.
