Zone One, A credible 5th @ the Masters (Aveley 16th, Redbridge 18th) and 2nd @ The Senior Trophy before that

Yes Redbridge were 4th @ The Grand Shield but there then followed a highly forgetable French Open and London last week, how 'unlucky' do you have be to be placed 17th?

A&N would be the first to admit they've dropped off the radar a bit, OK a pleasing result last weekend but the Masters before that (16th) and 16th at The Senior Cup?? c'mon this is not the Aveley of old and they've still a little way to go for me. Having said that Nigel Taken is nothing if not unpredictable so they could walk it at Stevenage BUT they could just as easily be nowhere...

Let's hope your tipping is not the same as 4BR's

The City of Oxford Silver Band now have a full band and are looking forward to playing in the 4th section.

Really? When was the last time Aveley came "nowhere" at the Areas? It would be a suprise if they were outside the top 2, outside top 3 would be a major upset, outside top 4 would be unthinkable!

Almost as good as Shirebrook's first go (Midlands area)

The last time they were off the podium was in 1996. They've been even more consistent than Redbridge, who have won far more, but also had a couple of 4th places in that time.

I had a great long drawn out rant ready there, it took so long to type that I timed out and now i've lost it.

Here's a summary. The big boys get bloodied noses at the areas sooner or later and when a band has had a distinctly forgetable year results wise it's never more likely.

Paddy is not saying this is a two, three or even four horse race, try FIVE. Other than my top 3 (which still includes A&N btw) we have the newly crowned first section national champions, they are always going to be contenders unless they're in Yorks or North-West and frankly Norfolk Brass could well cause a few stunned gasps come results time.

But perhaps the clincher is this, we have a band that goes to The Senior Cup as 100/30 favs, tipped by EVERYONE (with the exception of 4br) and then comes 16th and you're telling me it's 'unthinkable' that they might finish 4th out of five highly worthy contenders.

This contest is not a sown-up cabal between two big beasts anymore

Blackpool was a very bad day, I think the whole band that competed would admit that the performance was definitely not what it had been in the morning rehearsal!
In reverse I came out of Kettering fairly pleased and the band was placed in the abyss....!

(obviously this is my view of how we played and may not be the view of Aveley and Newham as a band, I was a dep for those 2 contests)

£20 on Ipswich to even have a band come March!

Yet A&N STILL beat Redbridge, as did Zone 1. Proves last weekends ordering of the London bands was no fluke.

What price come March on the result as follows:

1: A&N (Nigel Taken has a great record conducting Paganini.... and we're not talking the black circular variety!)
    2: Zone 1
    3: Redbridge
    4: Friary Guildford

Section 1 could be a bloodbath on Carnival Romain!!!!

How's 'Double Carpet' - 33/1 sound to ya

Carnival in the first?, Yes... I fear many a bandsman will come un-stuck after seeing a pleasing number minims instead of semi-quavers "That'll sort 'em out" has already been said by the usual silver-surfer-seen-it-done-it type

Oh dear..., a further glance at the record book reveals a 19th place from a 21 band field at the Masters on it in 2006

ah well, if there's one crumb of comfort, Redbridge were last that day

Perhaps some good examples of his 'great record conducting Paganini' (black circular variety or not) would be useful Ava?
