Could anyone suggest an own choice test piece contest in May/June somewhere in the North of England. Our conductor wants to do a test piece, but there's no appropriate contest in Scotland at that time of year and we're not qualified for the Spring Festival at Blackpool.

Whitehaven contest in Cumbria which should be quite easy to get to from Scotland and is normally in mid May. There isnt that many entries in most sections. Think the championship and first are amalgamated though. My band Dunston won the 4th section last year and I am sure the first prize was somewhere between 300 and 500 pounds so not to be sniffed at. You can also enter the section/s above as well your own as long as you play a different test piece in each.:tup

Cumbria Brass Band Association Contest - Held in Whitehaven on the 15th May ( Sunday )2005.

As has been said the prize money is usually very good at this contest because of the sponsors which it attracts.
We ( Dearham ) are going to enter into two sections, 2nd and 3rd.

We have done this one for many years as it is on our doorstep, which makes a change for us, we normally have to pay a fortune to get anywhere on a coach. It is usually a very good day out..... good company and plenty of the amber liquid flowing..or whatever takes your fancy.

Hope to see you all there !
    and best of luck.

As has already been said, the Whitehaven contest is held in May, the prize money is always good and the beer isn't too bad either, Ray Tennant is in the box this year!
