    John Williams
    Robert Farnon
    Prokofiev
    Tchaikovsky
    Holst
    Copeland
    Mussorgsky

Some of those died before the brass band format was really settled - Tchaikovsky (1893) and Musorgsky (1881).

I've always thought that Shostakovich would have made a great band composer - cheeky 20th century tunes with real artistic merit that you can really hum coupled with an approach to harmony strongly rooted in traditional ideals - exactly what moderately forward-looking banders are after (and generally failing to find) nowadays. But you've got to wonder how much of that was due to the repressive nature of the regime he worked under - maybe a commission for British brass band would have been less accessible...

Definitely worth a separate thread this, so I've split it out from the 'Nimrod' thread :tup

I'll have to have a proper think, but can I add George Gershwin to the list?

All those slab-like textures - that could have worked very nicely. Good one.

Or maybe Bruckner for big band, anyone?

I would have liked Frank Zappa to have written for band. Nearest living equivalent will now be Django Bates.

Did Holst only write Moorside suite for band?

If so, I wish we'd had more from him....
