Oktoberfest or a better idea??

Now that the regionals are out of the way and my band hasn't made it to Harrogate, I am going to start planning my trip to Oktoberfest.

I've never been before, but a load of us from the band and some other mates reckoned it would be worth going. There was a suggestion of taking instruments but to be honest I can't be bothered with that! We agreed that we'd start looking to book after the contest, but then someone told me that Oktoberfest is rubbish as it's so massive and 'commercialised'. Is that the case?

Any of you been? Any words of advice?

    OR

Any ideas of an alternative festival offering the same type of delights that we'd be looking for? Lots of beer drinking, live music (oompah!), good atmosphere, and no strobe lighting!! :tup

Sounds like Pontins... are you also looking for the delights of prison camp accommodation and the Muppet theme tune at 4am?

I went to Oktoberfest in 2006, it is massive and very commercialised - but great fun none-the-less. There would be nowhere for you to play - it is basically housed in a giant theme park and the beer tents house 10,000 people each. The "so called" oompaah bands normally have vocalists etc with a big PA system and not what you normally think of when you think of a BierKeller.

It is also difficult to get a drink these days as you can only drink if you have a seat as it is all done though a waitress service.

Would recommend going though - just leave the instruments at home

    Cheers... not taking instruments!

Where did you stay? I've heard about a 'campsite' with a choice of tents or dorms, but that sounds like absolute carnage! Was advised to get a hotel near the airport then jump on the metro every day. We'll prob book the tables online before we go :tup
