Cubbington came good third time round. Thanks for all the congratulations.

Sunday was a great day out, a round of applause to all who took part  .

    Looking forward to Harrogate.

Fortunately, I never did any exams, but I've experienced some Mr Morrison's unusual and idiosyncratic adjudications in the past. I notice that he advertises himself - in the programme notes - as someone who likes to issue his criteria in advance to "take away blind rehearsal time". Seems that we did exactly that for 3 months!

Thats OK Postie. Sad as it sounds I'd already worked out that we had to finish 10 places above the bands at the top of the rankings going into the Contest.

Next year we can finish 11th and still go up as joint leaders of the Section, and that assumes that the next band wins. Its a bummers those missed contests, but as everyone says after a contest they thought they did better in "Thats Banding!".

See you next year, but, hopefully not at the Belvedere Club.

OK - here goes with the Grading Tables as I have worked them out, if anyone notices any errors then I'm sorry but please pm me and I'll amend them - If I've included any now defunct bands then I apologise but I've only been back in banding for 10 months and I'm not exactly up to speed!!

    promotions/relegations

Well I have the table as follows for the championship:

WP Sovereign 8 Desford Colliery 10 Newstead Welfare 12 Jaguar (Coventry) 13 GUS 14 Staffordshire 16 Thoresby RJB 17 Ratby 21 Kibworth 21.5 Raunds Temperance 24.5 Ransome Band 25 Foss Dyke 25.5 Langley 27.5

and as follows for the first section

    Derwent 16 Enderby 19 Jackfield 20 Bedworth 22 Shirley 22 Forresters 23 Gresley Colliery 24 Glossop Old 25 Riddings 25 Brackley and District 26 Wigston 27 Ibstock 29 Towcester 32 Hopkins Blidworth 33 Shirland Welfare Training 34 Hathern 37 Stourport 38 Tintwistle 38 Snibston and Desford 43
not worked anything out below that yet

How any do they relegte from the champ section, as wasn't there a directive about 12 bands in each championship section?

Apologies for Glossop in the 2nd section and Wigston into the Championship section! I noticed but with the 5 minute limit on editing posts I was too late...

In the first section I wasn't sure about Jackfield (I meant to add a proviso but forgot) even having read the rules I couldn't make out whether they kept their score from their promotion year in 2005 or whether they should have got 8 points for that year.

As regards Glossop 4br says that they didn't compete in 2005 but that was in the Championship section and they were then relegated which should give them the 8 points I have assigned.

If I am wrong on either count can someone let me know for sure and I'll aska mod to edit the post.

    second attempt at promotion relegation

and it didn't look like that when I submitted it

The text in green is the average scores given for years the bands were in the section below and the text in red is the scores given for years the band were in the section above
the text in black is a DNC score

    so here goes again

    WP Sovereign 1 4 3 = 8
    Desford 2 6 2 = 10
    Newstead 5 1 6 = 12
    Jaguar 3 2 8 = 13
    GUS 4 5 5 = 14
    Staffs 8 7 1 = 16
    Thoresby 7 3 7 = 17
    Ratby 9 8 4 = 21
    Kibworth 6.5 6 9 = 21.5
    Raunds 6.5 6 12 = 24.5
    Ransome 6 9 10 = 25
    Foss Dyke 6.5 6 13 = 25.5 Relegated
    Langley 6.5 10 11 = 27.5 Relegated

    And for the first section

    Derwent 8 6 2 = 16 Promoted
    Enderby 10 5 4 = 19 Promoted
    Jackfield 8 9 3 = 20
    Bedworth 2 8 12= 22
    Shirley 8 7 7 = 22
    Foresters 8 9 6 = 23
    Gresley 13 10 1 = 24
    Glossop 16 4 5 = 25
    Riddings 8 3 14 = 25
    Brackley 6 11 9 = 26
    Wigston 8 9 10 = 27
    Ibstock 7 14 8 = 29
    Towcester 8 9 15 = 32
    Hopkins Blidworth 8 9 16 = 33
    Shirland Welfare 8 9 17 = 34
    Hathern 11 15 11 = 37
    Stourport 8 12 18 = 38 Relegated
    Tintwistle 12 13 13 = 38 Relegated
    Snibston Desford 8 16 19 = 43 Relegated

    but again is not official

Uniy's wrong in the 2nd section but won't effect promotion or relegation. Should be an average, 6, 5 I think

Sorry mate..a few errors. Mainly I think where the average points are concerned, especially where a band has been promoted and then demoted within 3 years (Look at Jackfield's points). I'll only point out the errors in 1st section as I started from the "Official Table" after 2006 which states the average points. Don't forget average is 1+2+3+4+....+16+17+18 all divided by 18 if there are 18 bands NOT 18 bands/2. The details of the rules can be found here.

    http://www.regional-contest.org.uk/london/National Brass Band Championships Rules.pdf

amended table from official table before this year and this years points:-

    First Section

    2005 (16 played 8.5 avg) 2006 (17 played 9 avg) 2007 (18 played 9.5 avg)

    Derwent 8.5 (Champ) 6 2 = 16.5
    Enderby 10 5 4 = 19
    Jackfield 8.5 9 (Champ) 3 = 20.5

jackfield were 4th in 1st section BUT promoted for 2006 and back in 1st for 2007. They have average points for 2005 & 2006 not the position they actually had in 2005...it's bad luck on them, but that's the rules....they should do OK next year with another performance like this year!

    Bedworth 2 8 12 = 22
    Shirley 8 7 7 = 22
    Foresters 8.5 (2nd) 9 (2nd) 6 = 23.5
    Gresley 13 10 1 = 24
    Riddings 8.5 (Champ) 3 14 = 25.5
    Brackley 6 11 9 = 26
    Glossop Old 17 (DNC) 4 5 = 26
    Wigston 8.5 (2nd) 9 (2nd) 10 = 27.5
    Ibstock 7 14 8 = 29
    Towcester 8.5 (Champ) 9 (champ) 15 = 32.5
    Blidworth 8.5 (2nd) 9 (2nd) 16 = 33.5
    Shirland 8.5 (2nd) 9 (2nd) 17 = 34.5
    Hathern 11 15 11 = 37
    Tintw(h)istle 12 13 13 = 38
    Stourport 8.5 (2nd) 12 18 = 38.5
    Snibston 8.5 (2nd) 18 (DNC) 19 (DNC) = 45.5

So Derwent & Enderby promoted to Champ & Snibston plus Stourport:( are demoted ...but don't take my word!..be perpared for the official tables which are usually out later this month.

It's very difficult sorting your own section out, let alone other sections without having the official tables as a start point....be careful....be very careful!;)

    Regards

    Smiffy,

Does seem a bit bad luck - but never mind we've got a trip to the national finals to make up for this!!!!!! The whole band are really chuffed .

Well done to all the other qualifiers - I only heard Gresley and I thought there performance was a real cracker - well done guys.

Also massive well done to Roger and the team at Wem & Steve Curtis and the Guys at Wellington Band - I don't think Shropshire has ever had this number of bands at the finals before! It must be something in the water!

    Simon.

send my regards to your solo euph Tony and to that Theresa girl on the back row!

Have a great time at the nationals!

In the program for the Yorkshire Areas, there was a bit in the pre-amble which mentioned that students from a band adjudication course were there.
I wonder how their results matched the official adjudicators!

According to the Midlands Area programme, there can only be a maximum of 12 bands in the Championship Section. On that basis, 3 bands will be relegated this year.

Am I correct in saying this?

You are correct in saying that but think the Midlands Regional Committee have the final say, the suggestion is that 12 bands remain in the Championship section but it is not compulsory. In that past though three bands have been relegated to ensure the 12 bands remain. On the occasional year when that has been difficult if say four bands ended up on similar points then the rule has not been applied.

So guess we will all have to wait for the final placing to come through. Have to say I much prefer the Yorkshire approach with the league tables shown in the program and also on the web site. Seems far less secretive and open

    Thanks for that Hornted.

I agree, it would be helpful to adopt the 'Yorkshire approach', maybe a suggestion should be made in this regard.

Would also be nice to be sent the tables for all the sections in the Region. As we are only sent the table for your own section it we aren't even able to see which are the bands being promoted and relegated into the section.
I know that West of England are sent the tables for every section and it is much better IMO.
There again, the WoE have (or at least did a few years ago!) to wait a lot longer to receive their official tables (September springs to mind). At least the Midlands Committee are relatively quick at issuing the Official Grading Tables!!

Can't have it all I suppose ........... or could we? Pretty please!!
