Cant really see the winner being outside this five, if I had to stick my neck out I would probably say Dyke, BAYV, YBS, Grimethorpe, B&R.

I am sure Fodens will be in the mix and I hope Sellers are well up there too after touring with three of their players. Hepworth would also be up there i expect.

    What do I know though

I think if you include your other two 'dark horses' and Co-Op the winner will probably be one of those eight.

hat I have really started to notice is that in these "one off" contests where only won test piece is played, the best band does not always win for one or more of many reasons....

    1) they don't take the contest as seriously as they should
    2) the adjudicators don't like their interpretation
    3) there is only one piece so it is difficult to sort out very good performances (unlike europeans with the set and own choice)

I think if you look at it, some really good bands Hepwroth, Fodens & Grimthorpe don't have nationals to play for and may therefore be a bit more persistent to do well.

The Open continually throws up surprises. According to 4barsrest:

Last year Dyke were 6th, Faireys 12th and YBS 14th.
    2002 - YBS 9th and Grimethorpe 14th
    2001 - Fodens 7th and B&R 8th
    2000 - B&R 12th

Never rule out an upset at this contest - people thought it was cut and dry last year and come results time, there were plenty of gasps and shocked faces!

As for my prediction- well, I will tell you after whether I was right or not!!!

    1 - YBS
    2 - Grimethorpe
    3 - Black Dyke
4 - Buy As You View
    5 - Fodens
    6 - Sellers

I think B&R will just miss out. As for the band to be dropped, I suspect it will be between Temps and Tredegar. I hope I'm wrong, but I fear it will be Tredegar.

I read recently that Sellers have 8 new players just joined. I don't know any of the new players and haven't heard them play, but I guess there is a danger that there are too many changes at once for them to gel and the band to be stable in time. Also, having seen the list of bands they have joined from not many have probably played at the Open before, so it will be a big test.

I'm sure they will do ok though. As long as they come below Hepworth thats fine ;-) Hepworth also have quite a few that haven't played at the Open before, so will be interesting for them as well.

I agree with some of the other comments that Grimey will do well, now that they have Allan conducting.

    Cheers!!!!

Can I nominate myself and Hepworth for being potentially the only band with acrobatic percussionists??? How I hit 3 triangles at once and get between glock and crash cymbals in 2 quick bars still eludes me...

Looking forward to my first Open with a great bunch of people though - CMON HEPWORTH!!!!!!!!!
