The Oxfordshire and District Brass Band Association are delighted to invite you to enter the 2016 Winter Contest, an own-choice march and testpiece contest. This will be held on Sunday February 28th, so it is a great opportunity for you to try out your area test piece before the big day!

Rules and entry forms are available for download from the ODBBA website at www.odbba.org. A strong entry is expected (entries have already been received!) so you are advised to get your entries in as soon as possible in order to reserve your place at the contest.

Do you have any news on whether the contest will be restricted to test-piece only, as mentioned in the rules, or will we still be playing a march as well?

    Thanks,

    Gareth

It is test-piece only. Full details will be sent out to entered bands later this weekend.

We haven't done this contest before, so we would appreciate any help anyone can offer. Are there any rehearsal facilities available at the contest venue, or, if not, are there any facilities in the immediate vicinity that people can recommend? We need to book approx. an hours rehearsal sometime around 3pm.

    TIA,

    Gareth

Our bandhall is probably the closest, but it's in use all day already.

City of Oxford band own their own hall, as do Wantage and Brackley, at somewhat greater distances.

Gareth, these two village halls are probably worth you trying, both are within 2 or 3 miles from Marlborough school:

    Shipton-on-Cherwell village hall www.shiptonhall.org.uk/rates.php

    Begbroke village hall begbrokevillagehall.btck.co.uk

On the dry side, more so with an audience in. High ceiling, but not that large side-to-side or front-to-back, and usually stuff hanging on the wall at the back that damps things a bit. Compared to many other contest halls, quite a reasonable acoustic experience. Can get a bit warm.

Thank you Herr Mesmer! Two contest wins on the bounce... First time that's happened to me since 1998.

Decent result for your old bandmates at Verwood too, and also for the mysterious Mr WagTheStick. :)

Yes I'm really chuffed for Verwood. :) First outing as a Championship Band as well. They deserve success as they have always worked hard.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but it seemed the most appropriate.
Does anyone know yet on what date the Spring Contest will be held in 2017, please? Nothing on the website yet.
    Thanks,

    Gareth

    Hi Gareth

It is on the website - except we call it the Winter Contest.

FYI, Unregistered, 3rd and 1st sections (not necessarily in that order) will be on the Saturday, and the others on the Sunday. This will rotate in 2018.

Thanks, Dave; the Spring Contest thing was a typo on my part, but I had missed it on the website - my bad, I think. Cheers for the extra info; not going to sit well for us, I'm afraid. I completely understand the reasoning on the part of ODBBA, but we always find Saturday contests difficult.
