How simple is that  now that would be an interesting calculation.

Ooops - sorry Alex you were there already.

Could even accommodate changes in the venues too - i.e move from Burton to Bedworth. Just give each band a map and a drawing compass

Road or straight-line? The straight line distance from Campbeltown to Blackpool must be pretty close to the straight-line distance from Campbeltown to Perth, but it's twice as far by road.

Until 1972 Saddleworth was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Bradford is about 28 miles from Saddleworth whereas Blackpool is 60 Miles but all saddleworth bands are in the North West. There are 9 or 10 bands in Saddleworth in most years there is at least one band goes to the nationals from saddleworth how much ddiffernce would it make to the balance of the regions if Saddleworth was to transfer to Yorkshire?

Road. An uber-geek could even factor in the effect on journey times of things like country lanes and the M6 on a bad day.....
    are you volunteering?

Changing band numbers or moving boundaries won't change the fact that a 3rd section standard band is a 3rd section standard band.

What would happen is a redefinition on an area by areas basis of what 3rd section standard is. Which defeats the point surely as that is even less of a level playing field.

(3rd section used as an example - same applies to all)

Why not stop calling them regionals? Just call them qualifying contests.
After this year's qualifiers, decide nationally on the number of bands in each section, divide it by 8, we'll call this X and then invite X bands to the contest nearest to their bandroom using tom-tom style technology.
Some bands may feel put out but it will provide an equal number at each contest.

Is it time for a section 5?

Which is what I said: "...redefinition on an area by areas basis of what 3rd section standard is"
