Newtongrange Silver Band are the newly crowned Scottish Brass Band Champions. At the Scottish Brass Band Championships held at the Caird Hall, Dundee on Sunday 13 March, Newtongrange emerged victorious in the Championship Section to claim the title of Champion Band of Scotland for second time in their history.

Conducted by Allan Ramsay, the band produced a fine performance of the set test piece, a new arrangement of the Overture to Wagner's opera Rienzi. Playing last but one, Newtongrange came through the field to pip old rivals, Whitbum, Scottish Co-op and Kirkintilloch who finished second, third and fourth respectively.

A huge roar greeted the announcement of the decision of the judges and there were scenes of great celebration in the hall as the Newtongrange band members and their supporters marked the historic victory in what was the 100th staging of the Championships.

Following a poor result in the 2003 Championships, Newtongrange had been demoted from the top section for the first time in many years but this setback only served to spur the band to redouble its efforts and promotion back to the Championship Section was secured with victory in the First Section at last year's Championships.

In securing the top section title in the year immediately following victory in the section below, Newtongrange have become only the second band in Scottish banding history to achieve this feat and the first to do so for over 100 years. Coincidently, the only other band to achieve these back to back titles was also a Midlothian band, the now deduct Polton Mills who enjoyed their successes in 1903 and 1904.

Newtongrange will now go on to represent Scotland at the UK National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall in London in October and at the 2006 European Championships. The band will be Undertaking additional fundraising to cover the costs involved in attending these major events, beginning with a Race Night in the Band Hall on Friday 1 April. Tickets for the Race Night are available from any band member or contact Commercial Manager Alan McLaren on 0131 440 3830.
