The Tilbury Brass Band is delighted to announce that Mr Alan Duguid has accepted a position as the band’s new Musical Director. A native of Aberdeen, Alan was born in 1982 and soon began showing a keen musical interest through playing the piano and trumpet. At the age of 14, he joined the cornet rank of his local brass band, Bon-Accord Silver, where his association with banding began. His first notable conducting engagement at the age of 17 with the Learig Orchestra and soon after this he became the Resident Conductor of Bon-Accord Silver, the band he played with. He studied for his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama from 2000-2005, studying composition with Dr Gordon McPherson and Rory Boyle and conducting with Alasdair Mitchell. After moving to Glasgow, Alan regularly worked with many ensembles in the area including the Glasgow University Wind Band, the Bathgate Band, Newtongrange Silver Band, Kingdom Brass, Clydebank Burgh and Shotts St Patrick's Brass. In 2001, Alan won the Scottish heat of the NABBC Conductor Competition, going on to represent Scotland at the NABBC finals in 2003. Since moving to London in 2006, he has worked regularly with the Amersham, Woodbridge Excelsior and Regent Brass bands. As well as conducting groups in the UK, Alan has had the great fortune to work with ensembles as far afield as Japan, which he has visited on many occasions, working with the Tokyo Brass Concord and several wind bands in the surrounding area. As a composer, Alan has written regularly for musicians at the RSAMD, as well as undertaking several commissions from other groups in Scotland. These include "Forte!" for the Bon-Accord Silver Band (recorded on their CD of the same name), "Taladh Chriosta" and "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" for the West Lothian Schools Brass Band (recorded on their CD's "Spirit of Youth" and "Earthrise" respectively) and "Is It Safe?" for the Hebrides Ensemble which received its premierè on 27th Feburary 2004. Alan’s position within the Tilbury Band will commence on 20th August 2008 when he will start to prepare the band for the SCABA Autumn Contest which is to take place in Folkestone later this year.
