I've been doing quite a lot of trumpet big band work recently, and am struggling a bit with lots (hours) of high register work. I normally play using a 1 1/4 C Bach mouthpiece, but am in need of something perhaps more shallow to take the strain?

Have been advised that a Bach 1D would be a good bet - i.e. similar cup diameter to what I'm used to, but less depth. Anyone have any opinions on this or any other moutpiece suggestions for the job?

I played on a Bach 1 1/4C for years then tried the Yamaha 16C4GP Gold top. I find it very comfortable but perhaps a change to a 3C mpc would suit you. The mpc safari begins!!!

I used to play trumpet in a big band, before i was roped into brass banding, i used a bach 7c and found it to be ok. I could play all day up to g# above the stave. I also tried a shilke 14a4a but found this to be too shrill, although I could reach extremely high notes on it with ease. Don't know if any of this helps at all!!!!

I play a 1 1/4C all the time but when I do high stuff (Big Band, latin, sop, piccollo) I use a 3C. I think it works great.

The joys of the mouthpiece safari :D

There are players out there making a good living as a lead player on larger mouthpieces, there are those who use small pieces. Try some out and choose the one that works for you without completely stuffing up the rest of your playing.

You might find some more advice on a specialist trumpet forum such as www.trumpetherald.com or www.trumpetmaster.com - both of which have some very respected trumpeters who are happy to lend their experiences and knowledge.
I'm guessing you will prbably find more trumpeters at either of these than on a brass band based forum.

    See you over there?

When I play Bb cornet (occasionally now) I prefer a Bach 1 1/4C, which I can play for hours on end without exhaustion.

I still havn't found my ideal soprano mouthpiece, I play with a Schilke 11C2 (? means nothing to me?) Open to ideas??

I played with a Northern Brass mouthpiece (cant remember model, I'll find out....) really shallow cup, and could hit top G's and A's (squeaky register lol) without any problem. Quite possibly the best mouthpiece I have played on trumpet.
