Penicuik Silver Band is delighted to announce that Terry Johns has accepted the position of Musical Director, and Tony Laidlaw the position of Bandmaster, with immediate effect. Terry Johns is renowned as one of the world’s finest French Horn players and has travelled the world as a member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and then the London Symphony Orchestra. He has recorded both classical and jazz albums, and has appeared on TV with, amongst others, Shirley Bassey, Tony Bennett and Peggy Lee. His playing can be heard on the soundtracks of many films including “Superman”, “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, and the original “Star Wars” trilogy. Terry also composes instrumental music, one of his best known tunes being the theme to Harlech Television’s “Pretenders”. His piece “Holland Park” was first recorded for his Divine Art album Classic and Romantic and was chosen as an examination work in the syllabus of Trinity College of Music. Tony Laidlaw joined Penicuik Silver Band in 1972 initially on cornet, moving to soprano two years later. He took a break from banding to concentrate on his principal instrument, the French Horn, returning to Penicuik ten years ago, eventually moving back to soprano cornet, his current instrument. In addition to brass banding, Tony has also taken up an appointment as one of Her Majesty’s State Trumpeters in Scotland. The band extends a warm welcome to Terry and looks forward to a long and successful future under the leadership of both Terry and Tony.
