Good luck all, but two bands in two sections is a bit ... rubbish.

How many bands will be affected by the National Concert Band Festival also on the same date in Glasgow?

yeah there are loads of bands doing things in other places on that day

i was thinking that as well...

anyone who plays in NYBB may have been affected by the date (there was a whole discussion on it in the rehearsal room i think) and anyone who is in NYWO is already half way through their easter course...

Yeah I'm playing in three bands that day (Rochdale Youth Wind Band, Rochdale Youth Big Band and Rochdale Borough Youth Band) which is a bit annoying because I think we're having to rush back from Glasgow to be able to play.

The main problem I'm worried about though is that I'll be knackered! The big band are doing 'Big Swing Face' which has top D's!! Not to mention the pieces that the brass band are playing.

And I'm quite surprised that there's only two bands in the premier section...last year there were 4 with a much much harder test piece (Lyonesse as opposed to Sinfonietta).

The problem that my son's school is facing is that the Sunday final is on the Sunday during the Easter Holidays - this might be a factor in schools not being able to participate hence the low numbers - but when I suppose that the position is noted that the RNCM only offered this particular weekend I think it might well be inevitable that there would be a problem.

The other problem is that the Abraham Darby Showband and Jazz Band are up in Glasgow for the NCBF National Festival - which is obviously another factor.

I know that weekends are limited - but perhaps something could have been sorted out. Oh well never mind - personally I am looking forward to the weekend - having never been north of the border.

Good luck to all bands who are participating.

at least you don't have to do what Johny Shaw is doing... he is with Wind Band, Brass Band and then he has to go to NYBB

Well we're going to have an awfully early start! Fantastic!

Why no St Helen's and West Lothian? Shame that 2 of the best youth bands in the country aren't going. Is this because of NYBB, etc. as mentioned earlier?

this is one of the reasons that worcestershire youth aren't going, as about 7 of our players are also in the wind orchestra, which is going to glasgow. also, with the competition at the beginning of the easter holidays, several people are on holiday. and once you start having over 10 people missing, it's not worth it, especially when so many of our players who would be missing are in prominent/principle seats.

Call me cynical, but I think that whoever wins is going to have criticisms of "oh, it wasn't a proper contest" at them, simply because only two bands competed.

Although I hope that doesn't happen!

For St Helens - partly, but I doubt we'd be going anyway.
For West Lothian - not unless NYBBS have a course that clashes?

I see your point, and it's not the bands' fault, but to win the 'Premier' section of the 'National' Youth Champs should mean that you have beaten the top youth bands in the country, so you can safely say 'We are the best, and we proved it'. If you've only beaten one band, it is hardly a proper contest is it?

woop woop, early draw so should be at NYBB for 7ish in the evening! having only two does seem a bit strange, but i think theres only been 3/4 bands in the premier section for the past few years hasnt there? could be wrong...!

usually there's 4 or 5 bands that enter the premier section..

I would agree with this comment if, for example, i entered my band went into the Premier Section and won (highly unlikely though!!). But both of the bands that have entered the Premier Section thoroughly belong to be there, and would be deserving of thr title.

Greater Gwent are current National Youth County Champons, as well as the Pontins British Open Champions, and Rochdale won the Action Research contest a couple of weeks back. Both are extremely good bands who would give St Helens and West Lothian a good run for their money.

Whichever band wins really will be the best youth band in the country, regardless of who else enters that section.

But by that argument, the only way to win would be to have every youth band in the premier section just to make you hadn't missed anyone out!

I don't mean any disrespect to anyone in these other bands, and I'm not suggesting that they aren't good enough (because I'd be surprised if they weren't) but maybe the test piece is too hard which is why they haven't entered!

There's usually not too many bands anyway...
