    Who is rockey ???

Steve “Rockey” Rockey is one of life’s good guys and is currently doing penance, for his sins in a past life, as Musical Director of Nailsworth Silver Band and its ten piece Ten To The Bar, and has arranged most of the pieces that Ten To The Bar play.

Rockey is a Conductor, Composer, Arranger and Trombonist.

Rockey started playing Trombone when he was thirteen and at sixteen he became a member of the NYO and remained with them until 1978, in 1980 Rockey joined the RAF and for eighteen years he was principal Trombonist and Soloist in various RAF Bands.
One of the main developments during his service career was his great talent for arranging and composing. He has had over 30 arrangements and compositions recorded on EMI, Bandleader and BBC labels, by Brass and Military Bands, Broadcasts on BBC Radio, and has arranged for all kinds of ensembles, Brass, Military, Orchestral, choral and Jazz bands. Whilst serving in the RAF, Stephen arranged and composed over 260 pieces of music.
He has arranged and composed for the BBC Songs of Praise programme, Desford Colliery Band, Travelsphere Holidays Band, Kirkintilloch Band (three of his arrangements are on their latest CD Angels and Demons), Camborne Town Band, the English Concert Orchestra and many other various groups and artists. He also won the competition for Best Military March composed by a member of RAF Music Services eleven out of the twelve of his entries.
In 1996, he started to study conducting via the RAF, his teachers including John Forster (Royal College of Music) and Frank Renton. During these conducting studies in 1998, Stephen was only the second person in the history of the RAF to be given the roll of Staff Arranger for the Royal Air Force, as well as being the Chief Librarian at the same time.
Rockey is working hard to further his career as a Conductor, Composer & Arranger. He is just finishing an MA in composition and will be starting a PhD with Dr John Pickard in October this year at the University of Bristol, he is currently writing a concerto for Trombone and symphony orchestra for Stephen Sykes, details to follow; as well as having music published in the USA.;)

Nailsworth Silver Band currently has vacancies for two front row cornet players and a Solo/1st Horn player, so if Rockey sounds like your kind of guy then contact the Band Chairman Tim Robbins tim_robbins@btinternet.com and come along to meet us all.

This post was not appropriate for bandroom news, it's an ad for players... but I approved it... and moved to Recruitment Corner. :)

We are caught in a dilema this week, our Rep. player has an audition an Kneller Hall on Friday morning.

We all hope she does well but are not looking forward to saying goodbye to her at the end of this month.

She has been a central part of the band for a lot of years and has been a great help to the junior band as well, she will leave a space that will be hard to fill.

    Meet Rockey

Being a Trombone player you would expect Rockey to be different, and in this expectation he does not dissapoint, Rockey is extremely talented not only as a player, composer and arranger but also as a band trainer and people person:clap:

As a player they do not come more extrovert and Rockey likes to be out in front of they band, during a recent concert in Bath Parade Gardens, Rockey played the Acrobat as only he can, no need for music because you could not write it how he plays it.

The breaks, the false starts, the Conductor doing an impression of a bird trying to fly with one wing, the other band members all going purple through not breathing because they do not know if they should breath or not, and all the time Rockey pleasing the audience with his antics whilst watching the band to see when he can catch them on the hop.

"All good fun" is a very apt description of Stephen Rockey:p

Nailsworth Silver Band currently has vacancies for two front row cornet players and a Solo/1st Horn player, so if Rockey sounds like your kind of guy then contact the Band Chairman Tim Robbins tim_robbins@btinternet.com and come along to meet us all.
