Having just sent Jonathan a text, he thinks it may be something from HMS Pinafore.

Not sure, if I remember correctly it is very slow and in 3/4 or 6/8.

They go up one rung every bar or 2 bars I think.

    Anyone else?

I thought it was the "High Level Hornpipe" - not sure though.

It used to be "Portsmouth" when we accompanied them.

Pretty sure I can remember it being done to "Eye level " ( the Theme tune to the detective series "Van der Vaalk " ) years back.

I've got this feeling that when I played it in the Army, it was called Westwood Ho.

I can't recall any specific tune played when I did it (climbed the mast) in HMS Ganges back in the 50s. However i will ask the question on the Ganges site
