Monkey riding to £25,000 for good causes

Kevin Wadsworth, Musical Director of the Yorkshire Co-op Band, adjudicator and former principal horn player of Black Dyke, Brighouse & Rastrick and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain is currently preparing for a gruelling Monkey Bike run from John O’Groats to Lands End.

A group of 30 riders, two retired police officer outriders and two paramedics from Medevent Limited will spend one week in June undertaking a Monkey Bike run from John O’Groats to Lands End in a bid to raise around £25,000 for two great causes; Greenlea Oncology Unit, Ward 12, Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Cancerbacup.

The gruelling Monkey Bike run is the brainchild of Kevin Wadsworth and Stuart Hobson. Kevin has been the driving force behind the whole project having had first hand experience of the first-class care given in Greenlea Oncology Unit whilst suffering from leukaemia in 2004.

Kevin, a keen Monkey Bike rider, has gathered other Monkey Bike enthusiasts from around the country through a forum on the internet and the riders will set off from Perrys Garage in Huddersfield on Saturday 17 June, when they will be sent off by a few players from Yorkshire Co-op. The riders will travel by train from Huddersfield to Scotland for the start of the ride on Sunday 18 June, whilst all the bikes will be taken to Scotland courtesy of Perrys, one of the events main sponsors. The riders will pass through Edinburgh, Lancaster, Coventry, Weston-Super-Mare and Bodmin on the way to Lands End before travelling back to Huddersfield on 25 June.

The Monkey Bikers will be paying for their own accommodation and expenses during the trip in order to maximise the funds being raised for the two good causes. The trip has also been made possible by several sponsors including Perrys of Huddersfield, Medevent Limited, Barrus, Adverc Battery Management, Kings Lock Chandlery, Calder Valley Marine, RoyScot Larch, International Marine Coatings, Lee Sanitation, RS Motor Homes, Isuzu, Kuranda, Premier Travel Inn, Vetus, Conroy Brook (Developments) Ltd., and DC Motorcycles of Huddersfield.

Kevin has been thrilled by the response and sponsorship so far and hopes that the overall figure raised will be around £25,000. He commented: “Cancer and leukaemia are non-selective and the money from this amazing trip will go to Cancerbacup and Greenlea Oncology Unit which is a wonderful, fantastic place and not scary at all.”

Anyone wishing to sponsor Kevin or perhaps organise a group of players to meet the Monkey Bikers along their journey can contact Kevin on 07836 511357 or e-mail Tabby Clegg at

If anyone's in any doubt what a mammoth task this is, have a look at this link....

...and see just how small a monkey bike is!!!

Fantastic machines and frankly hilarious to ride but not built for long distance comfort.... and do about 65mph flat out on a good day!

Come on, let's make an effort and raise as much as we can. Who knows, any one of us might wind up in the leukemia ward one day.
