...and a Guid New Year to ane and a', now that 2012 is officially underway!

Any tips for getting around Vienna without bankrupting ourselves, Mike? Have just booked a few days there for our 30th wedding anniversary, not until July but all info appreciated. Trust that your trip went well.

You'll love it. Get the Vienna Card. It lasts for 72hrs and allows you on the whole transport system, which is extremely comprehensive. It also offers a large number of discounts, through a sort of ticket book/guide book that you get with it. If you get the chance, go to the town of Kahlenberg (U4 U-bahn, then 38A bus). The views across the city are spectacular. Other worthwhile sites are Schönbrunn Palace, almost any of the various palaces and museums (Mozarthaus, Haydnhaus, Natural History Museum, Criminal museum) Also try the local cuisine. It's not easy for vegetarians in Vienna, or for non/ex-smokers!

Thanks Mike - apologies for late reply. Like the bit about the local cuisine - we are definitely NOT vegetarians, but are ardent non-smokers, at least our hotel is non-smoking. The hotel is on line U4 so may well try your tip for a trip out of town.
Only 6 months 3 weeks to go........!!

Don't be afraid to make the most of the U-bahn system. It's clean, safe and extremely well run and organised - not at all like any of ours! Another place you might like is the Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery - U3 to Simmering then S-bahn(tram) 6 or 71 to Turm 2 (5 stops)). There are many famous musicians buried there and there are some truly spectacular monuments and family mausoleums.
