After six consecutive number one draws Meltham and Meltham Mills, under the guidance of MD Stuart Fawcett, have started their 160th year in fine style with qualification for the National Finals. With a final rehearsal in the early hours of Sunday morning the band put in an exceptional performance from the dreaded number one draw and were duly rewarded with 2nd place, a place at the National Finals and the best soloist Laura Maynard (soprano) in the Second Section of the Yorkshire Regionals. Fundraising for Harrogate is already well under way in what is going to be a very hectic calendar for the band. Events already planned include our Annual March and Hymn Contest on Saturday 3rd June, which this year is being held at the Wills 'O' Nats pub in Meltham. Entries are open to bands of all levels with prize money in the region of £750. The 160th Anniversary celebrations will also see first class cornet player and soloist Roger Webster appear with the band in concert at St Paul's Hall, Huddersfield on Saturday 24th June 2006. This is sure to be a sell out and we urge everybody interested to obtain tickets early in a bid to avoid disappointment. To compliment our existing players and to complete our line up for this exciting year we are on the lookout for a front row cornet player, Bb bass player and percussionist. Please contact our MD Stuart Fawcett on 01484 309500 in the first instance. For further information on obtaining tickets for our concerts, entering the March and Hymn Contest, or if you are interested in helping the band with their fundraising for the National Finals please contact Alison Eastwood on 01484 358451.
