We have discussed "Walking Out" uniform for the band so what about the MD at rehearsals, concerts and contests?

Is what the MD wears important?

Or are they just the "Hired Help" so have no impact on the bands image?

    Any thoughts?

Every MD I've seen wears a suit to concerts and contests, though not necessarily in the band's colours.

To rehearsals they tend to wear their casual clothes or work clothes.

It does matter as they are seen to be leading the band by the general public, and therefore should not look like they have walked in from the street during contests and concerts. It is fine for them to wear anything in rehearsals IMHO.

I am far more interested in how things sound than how they look.

I take your point and personally I agree, but many 'fans' of the typical brass band scene don't...

It can be a bit off putting though if the MD is a scruffy overweight sweating and greasy chap with a comb-over and a lecherous attitude to the ladies...
A bit of deodorant is essential for all that arm swinging.

ps Not talking about you Jeremy!

Undoubtedly it'll end saying that the MD shouldn't wear a suit 'cause although it looks smart and allows the MD and band to have a sense of belonging and uniformity, comfort should be better...

Why would it end like that? By analogy with the WOJ thread?

But stage uniform and walking-out uniform are two completely different concepts...

Put all the MDs in tweed or velvet jackets for walking out dress code!

Richard Evans' kilt doesn't seem to have done him or his various bands much harm ;)

Aye, he's very much an honorary Scotsman these days! Good on him for doing his own thing.

All MD's ought to get a mirror they can check their back in as well as their front.

I have seen a number of MD's in poorly fitted suits for the job of conducting. If you have a beer belly do not put your tightest suit for conducting!
Think about opening the jacket for free arm movement.
If you jump about a bit make sure the suit has a bit of give unless you want to chance a rip that isn't from the troms!

Thought I would just state a suit can look awful too and if you don't believe me sit through an area contest and adjudicate attire :)

    ^^so right!

Have to mention that Otterbourne`s MD is worth observing for his very enjoyable back view. Such a firm pert bottom deserves one of these - - (He is very smart from the front too):)
