    Hepworth on LTTB

Congratulations to Hepworth Persimmon Homes Band, conducted by Mark Bentham, on their Listen to the Band broadcast last evening. And very timely, too, since they were the winners of the 2004 Scottish Open only last weekend. Clearly they are a fine band and we should expect to hear more of them in the coming year. Pieces played were Folk Festival (Shostokovich), Elephant Love Medley from Moulin Rouge, The Wizard (George Allen) and the Toccata from Suite Gothique (Boellman). The soloists were Robert Westacott, cornet, playing“Song and Dance (Sparke) and Emma Farrow, euphonium, with Ave Maria. A pity about the euphonium piece, which was a hotchpotch of the well-known Schubert melody, beginning oddly with the introduction to Cesar Franck’s “Panis Angelicus”, and sadly none of it well arranged.

I thought Emma Farrow was really really good, I must have listened to Ave Maria about 3 times over and over.
