Following the formalities which were the first two "heats", the Kippax Band Entertainment Contest finally sees some real action tonight with an intriguing tie between 3rd Section bands from different regions. Representing Yorkshire are Huddersfield and Ripponden Brass, while Barrow Concert, who play in the North of England regionals, make the trip up from North Lincolnshire. Just to make sure everything is impartial, the adjudicator is of course from the Midlands area!

The draw for order of play takes place at 7.30 p.m., with the first band expected on stage at around 8.15. We're hoping for a good size crowd for this first competitive action, so punters are advised to come early.

Also on sale tonight for the first time will be the 20 page programme for the contest series, featuring details of the contest and all the bands taking part. Priced at £1, this can also be obtained by post - please contact me for details.

...and what a great evening it was! In front of a packed crowd both bands gave it their all and it went right down to the wire.
Barrow Concert, drawn first, perhaps started the stronger and maintained a good level of performance throughout. Huddersfield & Ripponden, however, just seemed to gain in confidence as they went on, particularly after a beautiful euphonium "Benedictus", and, in many people's opinions, were about to just edge it until tiredness cost them in their "James Bond" finale.
In the end it was Barrow by 2 points, but either band would have been worthy semi-finalists.
Well done to both bands and thanks to all who came along and supported. Three bands next month - not sure how we're going to fit everyone in!!

South Milford Brass came out on top in last night's three-way heat, beating Dronfield and Dinnington and earning the right to face Barrow Concert in the September semi-final. Drawn first, South Milford set an impressive benchmark which the other two bands came close to matching at times, but never quite topped.
By far the most important aspect of the evening was that a packed club enjoyed around 20 entertaining pieces from three good bands who can all be proud of their contributions.
A special mention should go to Lizzie Raspin of Dinnington who, after encountering plumbing problems halfway through her flugel solo, borrowed a cornet for a dozen bars while her instrument was fixed and then seamlessly switched back - a real trouper!
The first semi-final, Dodworth MW v Wakefield Met. takes place on August 12th.

Sunday 12th August is the first semi-final and promises to be a real heavyweight battle as Dodworth Colliery MW (Yorkshire 3rd Section Champions) take on Wakefield Metropolitan (Yorkshire 2nd Section Champs).
Each band will perform a 40 minute programme and the first band will be on stage at 8pm. Get there early if you want a seat!

Wakefield 188 points, Dodworth 186, but it was very, very, very close, the result had a mixed response from the crowd, pity you missed it.

No still recovering from Andy Craig's wedding (well actually had a curry and a few more beers). Quite a few Dodworth players were there helping Old Silkstone out on Saturday - sounded very good and went down fantasticly with the reception guests.

So what programmes did the band's play?

Wakefield Metropolitan are through to the Final of the Kippax Band Entertainment Contest, having beaten Dodworth Colliery MW at the band club on Sunday night. After two very enjoyable programmes, adjudicator Stan Lippeatt gave Wakefield the nod by 2 points, but was quick to praise the level of solo playing, in particular, around both bands.
The second semi-final, featuring Barrow Concert and South Milford Brass, takes place on September 9th, with the final on November 11th. Entry forms are currently being sent out for next year's contest series and interested bands should contact the secretary if they haven't received a form.

With Wakefield Met. having already booked their place, tonight sees the second semi-final of the Entertainment Contest. Barrow Concert take on South Milford Brass in what promises to be an interesting and entertaining tie. Barrow previously got the upper hand at the Malton Brass contest, but South Milford have already claimed higher section scalps in the first round and will be looking to go all the way to the final on November 11th.

A reminder also that entries are now open for next year's contest series, with the closing date at the end of September. Secretaries who have not received a form should get in touch as soon as possible.

    Tonight's Result:
    South Milford 184 pts
    Barrow 181 pts
The audience were well entertained by both bands, particularly a couple of excellent soloists (or should that be 3 soloists Claire?). In the end, South Milford were just that bit tighter and gained adjudicator Stan Lippeatts approval on the night. They now go forward to face Yorkshire 2nd Section Champions Wakefield Metropolitan on November 11th and, with nothing to lose, must fancy their chances at a "giant-killing"!
Well done to all concerned

Sunday night sees the final of the Entertainment Contest, as South Milford take on Wakefield Metropolitan (8pm at the Band Club). Wakefield are graded two sections higher, but have been very busy lately with the Nationals and Pontins contests, whilst South Milford have impressed in every round so far and cannot be underestimated. Could we see an "FA Cup" style giant-killing, or will it run to form? - Should be a cracker!

Apparently representatives of both bands were at Kippax senataph this morning to witness Andy Fakes metamorphosis into Ginger Baker!!
Both bands are trying to lure Andy away from the mic and into their percussion sections.
Is there any start - sorry, end to this mans talents ;-)

I personally would like to thank Andy for showing us all the true spirit of banding this morning.
He did a difficult "Ask" to the best of his ability.
I didn't notice a rush of volunteers for the job.
    Well done Andy.

I respectfully refer the honourable gentlemen to the advert for a percussionist - surely someone can save the good folk of Kippax from a repeat of todays "bag of frozen peas" drum roll. Mind you, it'll teach the Legion to ask for "extras", and I reckon the parade sergeant might think twice before ordering "quick march" in the future! Wilkie looked like a little fat gurkha doubling down the high street!

 Respect due Andy. How dare you refer to my sidekick as a little fat gurkha  after he stuck up for you so manfully?? Brilliant

I can't get the image out of my head now :D

Once seen never forgotten - like a geriatric "Road Runner" scorching down Main Street.
I'm saving up for a power assisted Zimmer for next years "Kippax Dash" !!
    I'm going for Gold !!
Better get back on topic my little sycophantic masters of the cynical jibe, or those nasty Mods will be having a word.
