The Marple Band Baritone player, Mike Jackson, was presented with the Diamond Long Service Award by the North West Brass Band Association. The Secretary of NWBBA, Shirley Woodward, was invited by Peter Hargreaves (Marple Band Chairman) to present the award in recognition of an incredible 60 years’ service to banding. Mike began playing when he joined the now defunct Romiley Band in 1952 later settling at Marple where he has remained since the band reformed in the 1960s. Eileen Murphy, President of The Marple Band, read out a tribute from renowned conductor, Professor Garry Cutt. He hailed Mike as “an absolute stalwart” whose “unstinting dedication should be a lesson to all” before signing off as “The Governor". Accepting the Diamond Award with his typical grace and humility, Mike received an enthusiastic standing ovation from the band before returning to his seat to finish the concert – a true professional.
